Ash Wednesday

Christmas seems like just yesterday, but Ash Wednesday is coming next week. Among the observances at area churches:

“First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar St., will offer a Service of Contemplation on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The church will provide child care for infants through kids in kindergarten. For more information, call the church office at (509) 327-2467.

“Opportunity Presbyterian Church, 202 N. Pines Road, will host a service to celebrate the beginning of Lent at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The service will be preceded by a soup supper at 6 p.m. Call the church office at (509) 924-9750 for more information.

“Peace Lutheran Church, 4124 N. Harvard Road, will host an Ash Wednesday Taize service at 7 p.m. The service will be preceded by a soup supper at 6 p.m. Call the church office at (509) 922-9021 for more information.

“Metaline Falls (Wash.) United Church of Christ will hold its Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday at 7 p.m., including scripture, prayer, hymns and the receiving of the sign of the cross in ash.

“Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 1832 W. Dean Ave., presents its first “Dinner, Then Debauchery” Mardi Gras celebration on Tuesday.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with a family-friendly Cajun dinner, music and games. Kids are welcome until 8 p.m., when the adult portion of the evening begins.

Cost of the dinner is $5 per person. Adult beverages will be available for an additional fee.

The party will be followed by a traditional Ash Wednesday liturgy of repentance on Wednesday at 7 a.m. For more information, call (509) 326-6471.

“The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, 15319 E. Eighth Ave., will host its annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Church concerts

“The Unitarian Universalist Church, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive, will present Jody Graves on Sunday at 7 p.m. as part of the church’s Sundays At Seven series.

Graves, director of keyboard studies at Eastern Washington University, has performed throughout the country and serves as a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students, at the door. For more information, call the church office at (509) 325-6383.

“Don and Patti Parks will perform a benefit country and gospel music concert for Glen and Sherrie Tompkins on Sunday from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at Trinity Lighthouse Auditorium, 2902 E. Olympic Ave.

The concert is free, but food, kitchen items, small appliances, gift cards, clothing, compact discs, bedding, household items, personal items or cash donations will be accepted for the Tompkinses, whose house burned down on Christmas Eve.

Church speakers

“Whitworth University will present Robert and Claudia Mitchell on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Robinson Teaching Theatre in Weyerhaeuser Hall on the Whitworth campus, 300 W. Hawthorne Road.

The presentation is part of the school’s Heritage Week. The Mitchells will discuss “When the Scriptures Come Alive: An Introduction to Lectio Divina (Praying the Scriptures).”

The school will also present Darrell Guder on Thursday at 7 p.m., also in the Robinson Teaching Theatre.

Guder will speak on the topic “The Missional Church in the Public Square: Challenges for the 21st Century.”
