Huskies can’t get past Cal

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Patrick Christopher’s 3-pointer with 24 seconds left gave California the lead for good, Ryan Anderson scored 33 points, including 15 straight midway through the second half, and the Golden Bears held off Washington 79-75 on Saturday in Seattle.

Anderson was unstoppable for much of the second half, but it was Christopher taking the big shot in the closing seconds as Cal avoided blowing a late nine-point lead. Christopher tried to find Anderson on the low block, but instead took the jumper over Washington’s Justin Holiday.

Ryan Appleby overcame a horrid first half of shooting to score 16 of his 19 in the second half and nearly rallied the Huskies from a 65-56 deficit. Light-scoring Artem Wallace, averaging just 2.3 points and 1.8 rebounds for the season, had career-highs of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Jon Brockman, the Huskies’ leading scorer, was saddled with foul trouble all game and finished with 15 points and only four rebounds. Washington continued its season-long struggle at the free-throw line, making just 8 of 18 attempts.

(5) UCLA 82, Arizona 60: At Los Angeles, freshman Kevin Love had 26 points and 11 rebounds for his 13th double-double and the Bruins routed the Wildcats for their 20th victory of the season.

UCLA built a 20-point halftime lead and cruised on 57 percent field goal shooting. Russell Westbrook added a career-high 21 points, Josh Shipp 13 and Darren Collison 12 and seven assists as the Bruins won their fourth in a row.

Oregon 79, Oregon State 63: At Eugene, Ore., Tajuan Porter scored 23 points and made five 3-pointers to lead the Ducks past the Beavers.

Bryce Taylor added 17 points for Oregon, which snapped a four-game losing streak. Maarty Leunen added 12.

Freshman guard Calvin Haynes had a career-high 17 points for Oregon State, which lost its 11th straight game. Calvin Hampton added 10 points.

USC 67, Arizona State 53: At Los Angeles, Taj Gibson had 19 points and seven rebounds, freshman O.J. Mayo also scored 19, and the Trojans took command early in the second half to beat the Sun Devils for their fifth win in six games.

Freshman Davon Jefferson had 11 points and nine rebounds and Dwight Lewis scored 10 for the Trojans.

Freshman James Harden shot 8 for 9 including 3 for 4 from 3-point range and scored 26 points to lead ASU.
