Winger wings shot 65-11/2
University of Idaho senior Russ Winger put the shot 65 feet, 11/2 inches, an NCAA-leading throw, in successfully defending his title at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational track and field meet in Lincoln, Neb., Saturday.
Winger was given the meet’s Outstanding Performance Award, after finishing third in the 35-pound weight throw Friday.
Teammate, junior Matt Wauters, was second in the weight throw and threw a lifetime best of 55-101/2 in the shot, to take sixth place.
At Moscow, Idaho, in the McDonald’s Collegiate meet, Vandal assistant coach Angela Whyte set a facility record of 7.96 seconds in the women’s 60-meters hurdles, which put her into the top five this year in the world.
Hockey
League-leading scorer Tommy Latouche-Gauvin scored in regulation and a shootout as the Kimberley beat the Spokane Braves 3-2 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play Sunday at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
The Dynamiters won the shootout 4-1.
Alex Lelwica and Gabe West scored in regulation and Cash Ulrich made 32 saves between the posts for Spokane (19-24-6), including four stops in overtime. Skylar Smuteck scored the Braves lone shootout goal.
The Braves trail the Dynamiters (21-20-5) by three points for last place in the East Division of the Neil Murdoch Conference.
