Idaho to face Irvine in BracketBuster

The University of Idaho men’s basketball team will play former Big West Conference foe UC Irvine in the sixth annual O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters field Feb. 23 in Irvine, Calif.

Irvine has a 9-12 record, 4-4 in the Big West. Idaho is 5-14, 2-6 in the Western Athletic Conference.

The schools have not met since the 2003-04 season. The Anteaters lead the series 14-4.

Hockey

For the 11th time in 12 weeks, the Western Conference-leading Spokane Chiefs (38-10-1-4) are the top-ranked team in the Western Hockey League writers’ poll.

In the Canadian Hockey League top-10 rankings of teams in the three major junior leagues across the country, Spokane remains second behind Kitchener, Ontario (39-8-1-2).

Track and field

Idaho’s Russ Winger, who threw a lifetime-best 67 feet, 3 1/2 inches in the weight throw, and Paul Dittmer, who ran a season-best 8.09 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, are the Western Athletic Conference field and track athletes of the week, respectively.
