The merits of a pet sitter or a kennel
Dear Paw’s Corner: Which is better for pets when their owners go on vacation: pet sitters in the home or a stay at the kennel? — Joyce in Texas
Dear Joyce: That depends on several factors, including the duration of the trip, the quality of available sitters or kennels, the animal’s general health and the overall cost.
I’ve used both services over the years, in addition to bringing my pets to stay with family members (when they could take them). While my experience with both sides has generally been good, I’ve had the occasional problem.
For example, I had a sitter watch my cat over a weekend who simply dumped two days’ worth of food into his dish at once and played video games during her visits. I also reserved space for a longer stay at a pet kennel that advertised roomy cages and daily playtime in a large space — it had neither.
However, I’ve also had wonderful experiences with sitters and kennels. My advice would be to plan well ahead of the vacation, decide whether to use a sitter or a kennel, and start researching options. Find at least three sitters/kennels that look promising and visit each one. Ask to see the living spaces at the kennels, play areas, and so on. If you use a sitter, have each prospect come over to meet your pet (and you). See if the sitter develops a good rapport with the pet, and whether you get along with him or her, too.
Additionally, most quality kennels (and sitting services) book up during the holiday and vacation season. Try to make your choice and reserve a spot at least a month before your trip, so your pet can get the best care possible while you’re away.
