Lenten-themed events
It’s officially the season of Lent, which brings a wide range of events at area churches:
“Manito United Methodist Church, 3220 S. Grand Blvd., is offering its annual “Films of Faith Lenten Movie Series” on Saturdays at 4 p.m., starting today and continuing through March 22.
Today’s film is “Amazing Grace,” about how John Newton, the composer of the hymn, mentors the young William Wilberforce, who will later take a seat in the British Parliament.
Admission is free, including free popcorn and beverages. There will be a discussion after the film, which is rated PG.

“Bethany Presbyterian Church, 301 S. Freya St., will present a Lenten book study Sunday at 9 a.m. to discuss “A Political Reading of the Life of Jesus” by George W. Baldwin.
The book is available to purchase in the church office.

“Zion Lutheran Church, 8304 E. Buckeye Ave., will offer a Lenten worship service each Wednesday, including some special programs for children in pre-kindergarten through the fourth grade.
Services will begin at 6:45 p.m., preceded by a soup supper at 6 p.m. The children’s program will be offered during the service three times: on Wednesday, Feb. 20 and March 12. The children will join in the service on the other days.

“Peace Lutheran Church, 4124 N. Harvard Road, will host a Taize worship service at 7 p.m. each Wednesday.
The services of candlelight, silence and Scripture readings will be preceded by a soup supper at 6 p.m. Call (509) 922-9021 for more information.
“Millwood Community Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road, will host a Lenten class each Wednesday through Lent.
The evenings will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a light supper; the class will follow. Call (509) 924-2350 for more information.
“Potluck soup suppers will be held at 6 p.m. each Wednesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 810 S. Sullivan Road.
The suppers will be followed by a Holden Evening Prayer service at 7 p.m. Call (509) 926-8611 for more information.
“St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 304 S. Adams Road, will host a fish fry dinner every Friday during Lent through March 14.
The meal will be served from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. and will be followed by the Stations of the Cross and Benediction at 7 p.m. Call (509) 928-3210 for more information.
Buddhism workshop
The Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., will offer a seven-week “Essentials of Buddhism” course on Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. starting next week.
The course will discuss the basic teachings of Buddhism. The cost is a $20 donation to pay for handouts.
The temple also is offering a Vipassana Meditation Group on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. Beginners are welcome.

Spaghetti dinner
St. John Vianney Catholic Church will host its annual fundraiser spaghetti dinner Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the parish hall, 503 N. Walnut Road.
The meal will include spaghetti and meatballs, salad, rolls, dessert and beverages. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and children age 6-12. Kids under 6 eat for free.
