Lakers upend Magic

It hasn’t taken long for Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant to get comfortable playing together.
Gasol had 30 points and nine rebounds to go with Bryant’s 36 points, 10 rebounds and six assists as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Orlando Magic 117-113 on Friday night at Orlando, Fla.
It was just Gasol’s third game in a Lakers uniform, but he and Bryant ran the pick-and-roll play so effectively, they looked as though they had been playing together for years.

Pistons 91, Trail Blazers 82: At Auburn Hills, Mich., Chauncey Billups took advantage of Brandon Roy’s absence, scoring 17 points in the first quarter to help Detroit beat Portland.
Roy missed the game because of a death in his family.
Spurs 99, Knicks 93 (OT): At New York, Michael Finley made the tying 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left in regulation and San Antonio dominated overtime in a victory over the Knicks.
Cavaliers 100, Hawks 95: At Atlanta, LeBron James scored 26 points, Ira Newble added a season-best 18 and short-handed Cleveland held on for a victory over the Hawks.
Mavericks 92, Grizzlies 81: At Dallas, Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 points in the Mavericks’ victory over Memphis, which played on the road for the first time without Pau Gasol.
Nets 104, Bobcats 90: At Charlotte, N.C., Jason Kidd has his first triple-double since demanding a trade (19 points, 13 assists, 11 rebounds), Richard Jefferson scored 23 points and New Jersey turned in a rare strong performance in beating the Bobcats.
Kings 117, Jazz 114: At Sacramento, Calif., Kevin Martin scored 27 points and the Kings pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Utah, ending the Jazz’s 10-game winning streak.
Around the league
Two accused gamblers were indicted by a federal grand jury in Brooklyn on charges they paid off former NBA referee Tim Donaghy so they could place bets on teams. Thomas Martino and James Battista were charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to transmit wagering information. … Clippers guard Sam Cassell was suspended for the game against Toronto without pay for committing a flagrant foul on Boston’s Rajon Rondo.
