Track and field
Angela Whyte won three events, two in meet-record time, to highlight the 33rd annual Vandal Indoor track and field meet at the Kibbie Dome.
The Canadian Olympian and former Vandal broke her meet record in the 60-meter hurdles, running 7.92 seconds, and lowered the year-old 200 mark to 24.15. She also won the 60 in 7.49.
Washington State had three winners – McKenzie Garberg in the women’s discus and weight throws, Justin Woods in the men’s 60 and 200 and Jeshua Anderson, who won the 60 hurdles and 400.
Idaho’s Russ Winger, the national collegiate leader in the shot, won that event with a throw of 65-81/4 and then edged WSU’s Matt Lamb by an inch in the discus at 192-7.
Swimming
The Whitworth men and women are in first place after the first day of competition at the Northwest Conference swimming championships at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
The Pirates’ Natalie Turner defended her 2007 title in the 500-yard freestyle by winning this year’s event with a time of 5 minutes, 5.26 seconds.
Hockey
Kyle Sargent scored four goals to lead Fernie (29-14) to a 5-3 victory over Spokane in a KIJHL game in Fernie, British Columbia.
Skyler Smutek, Bret Kellogg and Jake Peterson scored for the Braves (19-24).
College football
After being arrested a month ago, Washington State football reserve safety Xavier Hicks Jr. was charged Wednesday with attempted second-degree assault and his suspension from the Cougars team remains indefinite.
WSU head coach Paul Wulff has yet to decide the length of Hicks’ suspension and it is unknown when Wulff will make a decision, football spokesman Bill Stevens said.
The Whitman County charge stems from a dispute after which Hicks, 21, allegedly put rubbing alcohol in teammate Grady Maxwell’s contact lens case. Maxwell did not put the lenses in his eyes, said Pullman police Cmdr. Chris Tennant.
“Rubbing alcohol in the eyes is going to cause significant pain,” Tennant said, explaining why Hicks received the relatively harsh second-degree charge. “It’s going to hurt like hell, basically.”
Tennant said the alleged crime seemed retaliatory, after Hicks and roommate Maxwell got into an argument over money.
Also still indefinitely suspended is starting defensive tackle A’i Ahmu, said Stevens. Ahmu was cited last month for being a minor showing signs of intoxication in public – known as MIP, a misdemeanor.
He turned 21 on Wednesday.
