Vandal, Cougar set marks

Idaho’s Russ Winger and Washington State’s Ebba Jungmark put their names on Dempsey Indoor records Saturday at the Husky Classic track and field meet in Seattle.

Winger broke former UCLA great John Godina’s facility record by a foot, winning the shot put with a throw of 66 feet, 61/2 inches. Jungmark, a freshman from Sweden in her first competition as a Cougar, sailed over 6-11/2 in the high jump to break the building record by a quarter-inch.

Former Idaho standout Angela Whyte had an outstanding day with a victory in the 60-meter hurdles 98.22 seconds) and runner-up finishes in the 200 (23.98) and long jump (20-41/2). Idaho’s David Holman and WSU’s Moreno Zapata finished 2-3 in the men’s triple jump with efforts over 50 feet, while WSU freshman Jeshua Anderson reeled off the fastest Cougar 400 meters in five years, 47.14 seconds.

Whitworth’s Emmanuel Bofa reached NCAA Division II national qualifying by running a 1:52.62 in the 800 meters.

Though he finished 11th, Curtis Suver broke the school record in the men’s 5,000 with a time of 14:03.64.

Baseball

Michael Guerrero surrendered one hit in five innings and struck out six to lead the Lewis-Clark State Warriors (5-1) to a 7-0 victory over the Whitworth Pirates at the Regence BlueShield of Idaho tourney in Lewiston.

In another game Saturday, Mayville State (2-1) took a 5-3 win over Whitworth (1-5). Billy Rigsby, Dan Ramsey and Matt Oye had RBIs for the Pirates.
