Achievements: Five complete basic training

Five area residents recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Air Force Airman Jose Flores is the son of Jose Flores of Pasco and a 2003 graduate of Pasco High School.

Air Force Airman Cody Grafton graduated in 2007 from Rosalia High School and is the son of Karine Moll of Rosalia, Wash.

Air Force Airman Justin Huber graduated from Cheney High School in 2007 and is the son of Terrance and Diane Huber of Spokane.

Air Force Airman Patrick Morphy is the son of Michael and Michelle Morphy of Spokane and is a 2006 graduate of Freeman High School.

Air National Guard Airman Nicholas Vanwormer is the son of Dave and Carol Vanwormer of Deer Park and graduated in 1999 from Deer Park High School. Vanwormer earned distinction as an honor graduate.

Gregory Yasinitsky, Washington State University Meyer Distinguished Professor of Music, was awarded the 2007 Marian E. Smith Faculty Achievement Award.

“St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., recently named the following four Spokane students to its fall semester dean’s list.

Sarah Wahlstedt is a graduate of Ferris High School and the daughter of Michael Wahlstedt.

Magdalena Wells is the daughter of Martin Wells and Susan Briehl and she graduated from Lewis and Clark High School.

Aaron Gunderson is the son of Patricia Gunderson and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School.

Drew Olsen is a graduate of Ferris High School and is the son of Eric Olsen.

Barbara Eldredge of Spokane was named to the fall semester dean’s list at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. She is a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School and the daughter of Bruce and Janet Eldredge.

Lyndsey Wells of Nine Mile Falls was named to the fall dean’s list at Randolph College in Lynchburg, Va.

Alyssa Christenson was named to the fall semester president’s list at Cottey College in Nevada, Mo. She is the daughter of Dianne Allison-King of Liberty Lake and Troy Christenson of Cheney.

Megan Tracy was named to the dean’s list for fall semester at Loyola University in Chicago. She is the daughter of Greg and Tammy Tracy and graduated from Gonzaga Prep in 2006.

Bobbie Riley was awarded a $2,500 NASA Space Grant Science Opportunity Scholarship from Washington State University. She is the daughter of LeAnn Riley of Spokane and a 2005 graduate of Cheney High School.

“Safeco Insurance recognized two local women for their service to the community with the Spokane Community Hero Award.

Marlene Alford was honored for her work with The Women’s and Children’s Free Restaurant. She was presented with a $15,000 check for the nonprofit organization.

Cynthia Hamilton was honored for her work with Hyper-formance. She was presented with a $15,000 check for the nonprofit organization.

“The following Washington State University students recently received Undergraduate Research Symposium awards.

Leah Jordan of Spokane won $300 for her oral presentation.

Darin McDougall of Colville was recognized for his poster presentation.
