Visa problems stall M’s Lopez

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Seattle second baseman Jose Lopez is having visa problems in Venezuela and will be the only player missing from the Mariners’ first full squad workout after All-Star outfielder Ichiro Suzuki and designated hitter Jose Vidro arrived Tuesday.

Ichiro, who signed a $90 million, five-year contract extension in July, checked in after the team’s morning workouts and did not take part in any organized drills. He underwent a physical and did some running on a treadmill but only after confronting a huge stack of boxes and mail piled up in front of and inside his locker.

Ichiro and the rest of Seattle’s position players were expected to practice together for the first time today.

Rangers, Kinsler agree on deal

The Texas Rangers and second baseman Ian Kinsler agreed on a five-year, $22 million contract with a club option valued at $10 million for the 2013 season. If the Rangers decline the option, the former Spokane Indians player would get a $500,000 buyout.

Tejada declines comment

Miguel Tejada said he’s been advised by attorneys not to comment on the Mitchell Report or an FBI investigation looking into his alleged link to steroids.

“I can’t really talk about that situation,” Tejada said upon arriving at Houston Astros training camp. “Right now, I just want to talk about baseball, because that’s really my focus.”

Astros beat Loretta

The Astros defeated former All-Star Mark Loretta in salary arbitration.

Loretta will be paid $2.75 million rather than the $4.9 million he wanted.

Pence crashes through door

Astros right fielder Hunter Pence crashed through a sliding glass door in the bathroom of his spring training home in Kissimmee, Fla., leaving him with multiple cuts that will sideline him for a week.

Pence said he was in a hot tub at the home where he’s staying and got out to use the bathroom. He had left the door open, but didn’t notice that a friend had just closed it. He hit it with his shoulder, leg and head and it shattered.
