The Spokesman-Review

EVERETT – Judd Blackwater and Ondrej Roman both scored in the shootout to give the Spokane Chiefs a 4-3 Western Hockey League victory over the Everett Silvertips in front of 5,554 fans at the Comcast Arena on Wednesday night.

With the win, Spokane improved to 42-13, two points behind the Western Conference-leading Tri-City Americans with 11 games remaining. Everett fell to 34-25 on the season.

The Silvertips’ Shane Harper opened the scoring with a goal off an assist from Zach Hammill at 8 minutes, 43 seconds of the first period. Trevor Glass responded for the Chiefs, scoring a goal at 15:07 to notch the game at 1.

Spokane scored two second-period goals to take a 3-1 lead into the third. Chris Bruton scored off an assist from Mike Reddington at 2:35, and David Rutherford followed that up with a goal – his fourth in the past three games – less than a minute later.

Everett came out strongly in the third period. Hammill scored at 14:40 to bring the Silvertips within 3-2. Harper scored his second goal of the night at 6:37 to tie the game at 3 and send it to overtime.

Neither team managed a goal in the overtime period.

Kyle Beach scored Everett’s lone goal in the shootout.

Dustin Tokarski finished with 31 saves in goal for Spokane, which won its third straight.

Leland Irving stopped 38 shots in goal for the Silvertips, who had a five-game winning streak snapped.

Everett converted 3 of 5 power-play opportunities while Spokane was 1 of 4.

If the Chiefs beat the Silvertips on Friday, they would join Tri-City atop the standings.
