Avalanche win 12-round shootout
Cody McLeod scored in the 12th round of a shootout to give the Colorado Avalanche a 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday night in Glendale, Ariz.
It was the longest shootout for both teams.
Paul Stastny scored in his first game back in the Colorado lineup after being sidelined five weeks because of an appendectomy, Marek Svatos also scored, and Tyler Arnason and John-Michael Liles had shootout goals to help the Avalanche snap a five-game winless streak.
Colorado also moved two points ahead of Phoenix into ninth place in the Western Conference.
Phoenix’s Derek Morris scored with 2.8 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Steven Reinprecht also scored, and Joel Perrault and Mike York had shootout goals for the Coyotes. Phoenix has lost two straight.
Morris scored on a hard wrist shot from the blue line through traffic and past a screened Jose Theodore with the Coyotes playing with an extra attacker.
Both goalies stopped the first five shootout attempts they faced.
Flames 1, Red Wings 0: At Calgary, Alberta, Miikka Kiprusoff made 38 saves in his first shutout of the season, Alex Tanguay scored and the Flames beat Detroit.
Kiprusoff was at his best in the third period as Detroit outshot the Flames 13-2. Twice the Red Wings hit a goalpost in the final 20 minutes of Kiprusoff’s 25-career shutout, which comes 64 starts after his last – a 1-0 win over Minnesota on March 27, 2007.
Ducks 2, Blues 1 (OT): At Anaheim, Calif., Samuel Pahlsson scored 32 seconds into overtime to lift the Ducks to a victory over St. Louis.
Pahlsson swiped in a centering pass from the right corner by Rob Niedermayer to lift the Ducks to their eighth win in their last nine games.
Stars 5, Oilers 2: At Dallas, Jere Lehtinen scored two goals, Marty Turco stopped 20 shots and the Stars maintained their mastery over Edmonton with a victory to sweep the four-game season series.
The Stars are 10-2 against the Oilers over the past three seasons and 22-4-2 at home against the Oilers since moving to Dallas in 1993.
Turco improved to 15-4 against Edmonton and helped the Stars win for the 10th time in 12 games overall.
