Freeman earns state tournament berth with win over Lake Roosevelt

Carley Heinen scored 18 points and Freeman secured a spot in the State 1A tournament with a 64-51 win over Lake Roosevelt in a District 6/7 1A regional game Friday at West Valley.

The win was the 100th career coaching victory for Scotties coach Matt Gregg.

Kelsey Raines added 15 points, nine assists and eight rebounds for Freeman (23-2), which outscored the Raiders by 10 points in the second half.

Also at West Valley, Jordan Harazin and Kayla Johnson scored 12 points apiece to lead Colfax to a 44-29 win over Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls). The Bulldogs outscored the Eagles 25-14 in the first half. Colfax (20-4) advances to play Freeman at 5 p.m. today at West Valley to determine the top two seeds to the state tournament. Lakeside (14-12) will play Brewster in a loser-out game at 1:30 p.m.

Taryn Russel scored 17 points and Hayley Hendricksen added 14 as Northwest Christian earned a spot in the state tournament with a 49-46 win over Pomeroy in a District 7/9 2B regional game at Mead High School. The Crusaders (21-4) outscored the Pirates 28-22 in the second half. … In another 2B regional game, Liberty used a strong second-half effort to beat Springdale 61-50 at Mt. Spokane. Teara Cornmesser scored 23 points and Kelly Hennessey added 13 for the Lancers (13-14), who will play Northwest Christian at 2:15 p.m. today to determine the third and fourth seeds to state. The Chargers (18-9) will play Pomeroy at 11 a.m. in a winner-to-state, loser-out game. Lind-Ritzville (21-4) and St. George’s (22-3) will play at 5:30 p.m. for the top two seeds to state. All games are at Mt. Spokane.

Kellie McCann-Smith scored 13 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter to lead Clarkston to a 47-42 win over Cheney in a District 7 2A game in Cheney. Jaimie Berghammer added 10 points and 11 rebounds and Amanda Laney chipped in 11 points for the Bantams (11-10), who outscored the Blackhawks 24-10 in the fourth quarter to erase a nine-point third-quarter deficit. Kyle Miller scored 22 points and Ceri Palk tossed in 11 for Cheney (9-12). Clarkston advances to play top-seeded Pullman (19-1) on Tuesday with the winner securing a spot in the state tournament. The Blackhawks were eliminated. … In another District 7 2A game, Chelsea Hardenbrook scored 10 points to lead Medical Lake past Colville 40-31 at West Valley High School. The Cardinals came alive in the second half, outscoring the Indians 25-16. Kelsey Gauche tallied a team-high 11 points for Colville (7-14), which was eliminated. Medical Lake (11-10) advances to play at No. 2 West Valley (16-4) on Tuesday with the winner advancing to the state tournament.
