Whitworth men beat Bruins

Ryan Symes scored 22 points and David Riley added 19 as Whitworth used a big second half to beat George Fox 77-69 in a championship-clinching Northwest Conference men’s basketball game at the Wheeler Sports Center’s Miller Gym Friday night in Newberg, Ore.

Colin Willemsen had 14 points and Ross Nakamura added 10 for the Pirates (19-6, 12-4), who won their second consecutive title.

Brent Satern had 20 points and seven assists and Evan Atwater added 16 points to lead George Fox (8-16, 4-11).

Women

Melissa Marek-Farris tallied a game-high 16 points, including 8 of 8 from the free-throw line, to lead George Fox to a 69-45 Northwest Conference victory over Whitworth at the Wheeler Sports Center’s Miller Gym in Newberg, Ore.

Elise Kuenzi added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Bruins (21-3, 13-2), who outscored the Pirates 35-13 in the first half.

Whitworth (13-12, 8-8) was led by Alida Bower, who scored 14 points.

•Gonzaga clinched at least a share of the West Coast Conference title for the fourth consecutive season after Santa Clara fell to San Diego on Thursday.

Track and field

Washington State’s McKenzie Garberg won the women’s 20-pound weight throw with a lifetime-best toss of 55 feet, 2.25 inches on the first day of the WSU Open II Indoor Track and Field Meet at WSU’s Indoor Practice Facility in Pullman.

Garberg’s throw was also fifth best in school history. Eastern Washington’s Erica Chaney took second with a distance of 55-11.

On the men’s side, Idaho’s Matthew Wauters won the 35-pound weight throw with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 68-9 3/4.

Football

Quarterback Nick Davila has been added to the Spokane Shock roster.

Davila spent two years at Chaffey Junior College and two years at the University of Cincinnati.
