Former University High and University of Washington vaulter Brad Walker topped a tough field to win the pole vault competition at the AT&T USA Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday in Boston in 18-8 1/4.

“I was pleased with the way I competed today,” Walker said in an Associated Press story. “For some reason, it’s tough to get a really good mark here. Not sure why. But I’ll take the win.”

•Washington State high jumpers Trent Arrivey and Ebba Jungmark each won their events at the WSU Open II indoor meet held at Pullman, bettering their NCAA qualifying marks.

Arrivey cleared 7-1 1/2 to improve his NCAA provisional and career-best mark by 1 1/2 inches. It was the seventh-best high jump in WSU history. Jungmark went 6-2, the second-best women’s performance in school history.

In other action, Idaho’s Mykael Bothum broke a school record and claimed an NCAA provisional mark by throwing the shot put 50-4. The throw bested her own school record by 7 inches. Eastern Washington’s Erica Chaney was third in 46-6 1/4, second on the Eagles’ all-time list.

College wrestling

North Idaho finished 15th at the NJCAA National Championships in Rochester, Minn., with 34.5 team points. Iowa Central won the championship with 138 points.

NIC’s Dino May won one match and lost two Saturday to earn a sixth-place finish. He was the only Cardinal to place in the meet.

College baseball

Shea Vucinich’s run-scoring single highlighted a five-run eighth inning and Washington State defeated Creighton 8-3 in a non-conference game at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Creighton (1-1) and Washington State (1-1) conclude their three-game series today.

•Brett Nicholas drove in two runs but Gonzaga dropped a 12-2 non-conference decision to Oklahoma State at Stillwater, Okla.

It was supposed to be the first game of a doubleheader, but it was decided before the game to play a single game Saturday and a series-ending doubleheader today.
