Tulsa blows by Falcons
Paul Smith and the nation’s top-rated offense turned a little charity into a lot of history in the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala.
Smith had his NCAA-record 14th consecutive 300-yard passing game, and Tulsa converted four fumble recoveries into first-half touchdowns on the way to a 63-7 romp over Bowling Green on Sunday night.
With all that help, the Golden Hurricane (10-4) ran up a 35-0 halftime lead and capped coach Todd Graham’s first season by reaching 10 wins for the first time since 1991.
Smith passed for 312 yards and five touchdowns, the last 3:22 left in the blowout. He broke the record of 13 300-yard efforts in a row he shared with BYU’s Ty Detmer, whose streak stretched over the 1989 and 1990 seasons. Smith also became only the seventh Division I player to reach the 5,000-yard mark in a season.
He and Tarrion Adams joined Houston’s David Klingler and Chuck Weatherspoon as the NCAA’s only 5,000-yard passing and 1,000-yard rushing tandem.
Jones may head to SMU
All signs point toward Hawaii coach June Jones becoming SMU’s new football coach.
Jones, expected to arrive in Dallas early Sunday morning, has sent letters to friends announcing he is resigning as coach of Hawaii, according to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and The Honolulu Advertiser. The letter listed reasons why Jones won’t remain at the school, centering on issues the Hawaii athletic department hasn’t dealt with.
SMU has offered Jones between $1.7 million to $2 million annually, according to sources.
Hawaii has also presented Jones a counteroffer to its original proposal, which Hawaii newspapers reported at $1.1 million.
Tedford adjusts Cal staff
California coach Jeff Tedford shuffled several spots on his staff, most notably hiring Frank Cignetti as his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Tedford also hired Al Simmons as defensive backs coach, reassigned three assistants and announced the departure of two others, including respected defensive line coach Ken Delgado, who has taken a job at Louisville.
Kevin Daft, who coached Cal’s quarterbacks last season, was reassigned to wide receivers.
Bob Gregory (Gonzaga Prep, Washington State) remains as defensive coordinator, according to Cal’s Web site.
UCF’s Smith to go pro
Central Florida running back Kevin Smith, the nation’s leading rusher this season, changed his mind and will turn pro, the school confirmed.
