Knight gets win No. 900
Bob Knight reached another milestone.
Texas Tech (10-6, 1-1 Big 12) rolled to a 68-53 victory over No. 10 Texas A&M (15-2, 1-1) on Wednesday night in Lubbock, Texas, for the Hall of Fame coach’s 900th career victory.
After the game fans chanted Knight’s name as he walked off the court to a thunderous ovation.
“You folks being here, seats being full for a change, really made a difference tonight,” Knight told the crowd before leaving the court.
Like when Knight surpassed former North Carolina coach Dean Smith on the Division I career list with win No. 880, he got his 900th on his second try.
The win was Tech’s third straight over an Aggies team ranked in the top 10. Last season the Red Raiders beat A&M twice by a combined four points. The Aggies were ranked No. 6 going into each game and were on nine- and five-game winning streaks, respectively.
(1) North Carolina 83, Georgia Tech 82: Tyler Hansbrough scored 27 points and made a crucial block in the closing seconds and the Tar Heels (18-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) held on for a victory over the Yellow Jackets (7-9, 0-3) in Atlanta.
North Carolina is off to its best start since the 1985-86 team began the season with 21 straight wins.
(2) Memphis 77, Rice 50: Chris Douglas-Roberts and Doneal Mack both scored 16 points to lead the Tigers (16-0, 3-0 Conference USA) to a rout of the Owls (3-13, 0-3) in Houston.
(7) Duke 70, Florida State 57: Jon Scheyer scored 21 points to lead the Blue Devils (14-1, 2-0 ACC) past the Seminoles (12-6, 1-2) in Tallahassee, Fla.
Massachusetts 82, (14) Dayton 71: Ricky Harris scored 22 points and the Minutemen (12-4, 1-1 Atlantic 10) beat the Flyers (14-2, 2-1) in Dayton, Ohio, snapping Dayton’s 13-game winning streak.
(18) Mississippi 89, Florida 87: Dwayne Curtis had 20 points and 12 rebounds to power the Rebels (15-1, 2-1 SEC) to a win over the Gators (15-3, 2-1) in Oxford, Miss.
Temple 78, No. 20 Xavier 59: Dionte Christmas scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half and Mark Tyndale added 22 to lead the Owls (7-8, 1-1 Atlantic 10) to an upset win over the Musketeers (14-4, 2-1) in Philadelphia.
(25) Villanova 76, DePaul 69: Scottie Reynolds scored 21 points and the Wildcats (12-3, 2-2 Big East) used a late 15-0 run to rally past the Blue Demons (7-9, 3-2) in Villanova, Pa.
Women
Connecticut senior starting guard Mel Thomas will miss the rest of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament and lateral meniscus in her right knee during the closing minutes of Tuesday night’s 65-59 win over Syracuse. The injury comes less than month after the top-ranked Huskies (16-0) lost starting forward Kalana Greene to a torn ACL in her right knee.
(6) Baylor 59, Kansas 35: Rachel Allison scored 11 points and the Bears (15-1, 3-0) beat the Jayhawks (11-5, 0-3) in Waco, Texas, to open Big 12 Conference play with three straight wins for the first time in school history.
