Idaho’s latest road test
Here we go again: The U.S. Forest Service under the Bush Administration has released a plan that could allow new roads and development into 7.6 million acres of Idaho’s 9.3 million acres of roadless backcountry forests.
In 2001, the Clinton administration designated 8.8 million acres of Idaho’s non-wilderness backcountry to remain “roadless.”
Soon after taking office in 2001, the Bush Administration sought to rescind the Clinton “Roadless Rule” across the country.
In 2006, after statewide meetings and study, then-Gov. Jim Risch said he could accept the original roadless rule of 8.8 million acres.
In the new proposal released this month, the Forest Service is suggesting that only 1.7 million acres of Idaho’s roadless areas be protected from development.
Another round of meetings is scheduled, including the following in North Idaho:
Tuesday — Bonners Ferry, Kootenai River Inn, 7 p.m.
Wednesday — Coeur d’Alene, Kootenai County Courthouse, 6 p.m.
Thursday — Kellogg, Idaho Health and Welfare Office, 6 p.m.
