Trojans surprise Bruins
Southern California’s two freshmen were better than UCLA’s one.
Davon Jefferson scored 25 points and O.J. Mayo added 16 as the Trojans upset the fourth-ranked Bruins 72-63 on Saturday in Los Angeles, ending UCLA’s nine-game winning streak.
Josh Shipp led the Bruins with 21 points and freshman Kevin Love had 18 points and 12 rebounds, his ninth double-double in 18 games.
Mayo tossed the ball toward the ceiling and jumped on teammate Daniel Hackett at the buzzer. He and Love briefly embraced after the first of two meetings this season between two of the country’s best freshmen.
UCLA (16-2, 4-1) trailed early in the second half, went on a 20-7 run to take a 57-51 lead, then got outscored 21-6 over the final 6:18.
The Bruins went scoreless over the final 2 minutes.
The Trojans (11-6, 2-3) came in with less experience, but they lead the Pac-10 in field-goal percentage defense and held the Bruins to 33.3 percent, their worst shooting of the season. USC shot 61 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free-throw line.
UCLA’s Luc Richard Mbah a Moute sustained a concussion in the first half and appeared briefly in the second half before leaving the game.
Stanford 67, (22) Arizona State 52: At Stanford, Calif., Brook Lopez scored every point during a 10-0 second-half run and the Cardinal (15-3, 4-2) handed the Sun Devils (14-3, 4-1) their first Pac-10 defeat.
With Jeff Pendergraph on the bench in foul trouble, the surprising Sun Devils had no answer for Lopez in the paint and saw the 7-footer almost single-handedly end their 10-game winning streak – not to mention the chance for ASU to stand alone atop the conference standings.
Lopez finished with 19 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, taking over the game after two free throws by James Harden gave the Sun Devils a 42-40 lead with 8:48 remaining.
Anthony Goods added 14 points for Stanford.
Arizona 79, California 75: At Berkeley, Calif., Jerryd Bayless scored 24 points and made four free throws over the final 9 seconds as the Wildcats (12-6, 2-3) rallied late to beat the Golden Bears (11-6, 2-4).
Chase Budinger had 21 points and Nic Wise added 15 points and a career-high seven rebounds for Arizona, which was off to its worst conference start in 25 years before coming from behind to beat the Bears for the 17th time in the last 19 meetings between the two schools.
