DVDs in the car?
From conversations on the Parents Council blog this week:
“More and more frequently I am behind those super-sized SUVs with cartoons playing on the player while they are driving around town.
“I can understand using them on a long car trip where there is nothing to see, like some of the stretches of highway west of here, but it seems ridiculous around town. What happened to good old fashioned conversation?
“What rules has anyone else instituted regarding DVD players in the car?”

“Yes, we have a rule – no DVDs in town. We only use our DVD player, which my husband actually made, on the highway. It’s just a family choice.
“There are many other things to do in the backseat while we drive around town – talk, read, play games, sing loudly (and for me, probably off-key), homework, research, etc. We usually talk and play games.
“We’re spending more time in the car this year, and so it’s the perfect opportunity to do things to stay in touch. Plus, I want to be able to concentrate on the traffic.”

“Nope, won’t do it. It’s amazing what bored little minds will come up with given the opportunity. Don’t get me started on the evils of TV – talk about boring!”

”Our society has become more and more of a ‘less verbal communicating’ country. With text messaging, e-mail, video games, DVD in the car, and the television baby-sitting our children, a drive around town is the perfect opportunity to talk – yes I said talk – to our children.”
