UConn upsets No. 13 Marquette
Connecticut, coming off a 12-point home loss to Providence, rebounded with its first win over a ranked opponent in almost two years, 89-73 over No. 13 Marquette on Sunday in Storrs, Conn.
Point guard A.J. Price had 17 points and eight assists to lead the Huskies (12-5, 3-3 Big Ten), and 7-foot-3 sophomore Hasheem Thabeet had one of his best games at Connecticut, finishing with 15 points, seven rebounds and six blocked shots.
It was the second straight loss for the Golden Eagles (13-4, 3-3), who lost 71-51 to Louisville on Thursday.
Connecticut’s last win over a ranked team was over then-No. 17 Washington in the regional semifinals of the 2006 NCAA tournament, the game before the Huskies lost to George Mason for the right to advance to the Final Four.
(9) Indiana 81, Penn St. 65: Eric Gordon scored 25 points and D.J. White added 22, including nine during a 14-4 second-half run that carried the Hoosiers (16-1, 5-0 Big Ten) to a victory over the Nittany Lions (10-7, 2-3) in Bloomington, Ind.
The Hoosiers won their 27th straight home game and stretched their winning streak this season to 12 games, their longest in 15 years.
(11) Michigan State 78, Minnesota 73: Drew Neitzel made five 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes and finished with 19 points to lead the Spartans (16-2, 4-1 Big Ten) to a win over the Gophers (12-5, 2-3) in Minneapolis.
Women
(2) Tennessee 79, Vanderbilt 63: At Knoxville, Tenn., Candace Parker scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to help the Lady Vols (16-1, 4-0 Southeastern Conference) beat the in-state rival Commodores (13-6, 2-2).
(4) Maryland 99, Georgia Tech 95 (2OT): At College Park, Md., Crystal Langhorne had 31 points and 15 rebounds and the Terrapins (22-1, 6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) overcame 25 turnovers to earn their 12th straight win in a game that featured 23 lead changes and 18 ties. Alex Montgomery’s 26 points led the Yellow Jackets (16-3, 3-2).
(5) Rutgers 70, Louisville 57: At Piscataway, N.J., Matee Ajavon scored 23 points as the Scarlet Knights (15-2, 5-0 Big East) won their 10th straight. Angel McCoughtry led the Cardinals (12-6, 1-4) with 20 points – three below her Big East-leading average.
(6) Baylor 84, (11) Oklahoma 73: At Norman, Okla., Angela Tisdale scored a career-high 35 points and Rachel Allison added 17 to help the Bears (16-1, 4-0 Big 12) beat the Sooners (11-4, 2-2).
(7) Stanford 60, Arizona State 56: At Tempe, Ariz., Candice Wiggins scored 18 points as the Cardinal (16-3, 6-2 Pac-10) rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat the Sun Devils (11-7, 5-2). Arizona State’s Briann January (Lewis and Clark High) had a game-high 20 points.
(9) LSU 84, Mississippi St. 31: At Baton Rouge, La., Quianna Chaney scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half to help the Lady Tigers (14-3, 3-0 SEC) rout the Bulldogs (12-6, 0-3).
(10) Duke 71, North Carolina State 57: At Durham, N.C., Chante Black had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils (14-4, 3-1 ACC) past the Wolfpack (12-7, 0-4).
