Area residents complete basic military training

Air Force Airman 1st Class Keith Schmidt recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

He is the son of Colleen Schmidt of Medical Lake.

•The following local residents graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

Army Pvt. Daniel Peck is the son of Gary and Sharon Schultz of Harrington, Wash., and graduated in 2007 from Harrington High School.

Army Pvt. Tana Todd graduated from Ferris High School in 2007 and is the daughter of Ted Todd of Spokane.

Army Pvt. Dylan York is the son of Howard York of Moses Lake.

•Two area residents recently graduated from Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.

Army Reserve Pfc. Joshua Schmitz has graduated from basic infantry training. He is the son of Judy Schmitz of Deer Park and is a 2000 graduate of Deer Park High School.

Army Pvt. Mack Hartle graduated from the infantryman one station unit training. The training consists of basic infantry training and advanced individual training.

He is the son of Mack Hartle of Weiser, Idaho, and Nicki Wortham of Moses Lake.

•Army Cadet David Stone attended the 2008 George C. Marshall Foundation Awards Seminar at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va. He was awarded the George C. Marshall Reserve Officer Training Corps Award at the seminar.

The award is presented annually to top senior Army ROTC cadets in military science studies and leadership values in each battalion at host universities or colleges. This national award is the highest award an ROTC cadet can receive.

Stone is the son of Mike and Lu Ann Stone of Spokane. He graduated from Gonzaga Preparatory School in 2004.

•Eastern Washington University announced four area students awarded scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year.

Curtis Haynes of Mead received a $1,000 Eleanor and Clifton Rock Economics Scholarship. He is a graduate of Mt. Spokane High School and is the son of Curtis and Cheryl Haynes of Mead.

Katherine Bischoff received a $2,500 Scholastic Honors Scholarship. She is the daughter of Randy and Patricia Bischoff of Spokane Valley and is a graduate of Immanuel Lutheran School.

Viktoriya Malko was awarded a $1,600 Arnold Carlson Memorial Scholarship. She is the daughter of Mikhait Kutsar and Yelena Kutsar of Spokane and a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

Alexis Obenchain was awarded a $1,500 Africana Education Program Multicultural Achievement Scholarship. She is a graduate of University High School and is the daughter of Dan and Maria Obenchain of Spokane Valley.

•Gonzaga University recently announced local residents named to the spring semester president’s list. Students must earn a grade-point average of 3.7 or better to be recognized on the list. Students are listed by their hometowns.
