Cheney considers housing projects

CHENEY – A 137-lot subdivision and a five-unit apartment for student housing are among new development proposals being considered in Cheney.

Landworks Engineering Inc. has submitted a project review for 137 single-family homes at the northwest intersection of Betz and Murphy roads, with lot size ranging from 6,600 square feet to 15,941 square feet.

The plan includes a neighborhood park, a storm-water drainage system, a wetland and trail system and an agreement with the city to plant street trees.

Elisa Rodriguez of the planning department said the project review will also include comments from a public hearing with the Planning Commission on July 14.

“What they have to say is valuable,” Rodriguez said.

The Community Development Department also received a project review for a five-unit apartment building between 105 and 121 N. Ninth Street from Premier Student Living, a development company based in Naples, Fla.

The zoning code allows for one apartment per 2,000 square feet and one studio apartment per 1,000 square feet.

The project, which will be student housing, will include two stories, a daylight basement and 11 parking spaces.

The project review stated that permits have been issued for four units and once the State Environmental Policy Act review is complete, the applicant might build a fifth unit in the daylight basement.

Rodriguez said there is no need for a public hearing for this project, but was taking comments from the public until July 1.

“Both are pretty good projects overall,” she said.
