Phillies 4, Cardinals 1: At Philadelphia, Ryan Howard homered twice and drove in three runs to help Philadelphia defeat St. Louis. Howard lined a two-run shot to left-center off Braden Looper in the first and connected again in the sixth. He leads the league with 27 homers, two better than teammate Chase Utley, and 83 RBIs.

Diamondbacks 7, Nationals 5 (11): At Washington, Arizona blew a two-run lead in the ninth and a three-run lead in the 10th before finally putting away Washington with two runs in the 11th.

Reds 12, Cubs 7: At Chicago, David Ross hit two of Cincinnati’s seven homers, a long-ball barrage that included Ken Griffey Jr.’s 605th, and the Reds beat Chicago to avoid a three-game sweep.

Mets 7, Giants 3: At New York, Fernando Tatis homered, doubled twice and drove in four runs and the Mets defeated San Francisco for their sixth straight win.

Brewers 11, Rockies 1: At Milwaukee, Dave Bush had a career-high 13 strikeouts, Corey Hart hit his 15th homer and Milwaukee beat Colorado. Bush retired 23 of 24 batters after allowing a first-inning run.

Marlins 5, Dodgers 4 (11): At Los Angeles, Hanley Ramirez homered with two out in the 11th inning, capping the first five-hit game of his career and helping Florida beat Los Angeles.

Interleague play

Pirates 4, Yankees 2: At Pittsburgh, Nate McLouth hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh, and Paul Maholm allowed two runs over eight innings as Pittsburgh rallied to beat New York.
