Hornets’ Chandler will train with Team USA
New Orleans Hornets center Tyson Chandler has accepted an invitation to train with the U.S. national team in Las Vegas later this month, shortly before the team departs for the Olympics in China.
“This will allow Tyson and the team to be better prepared in the event that he is needed,” USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo said Tuesday on USA Basketball’s Web site.
Whether the 7-foot-1 Chandler travels to China with the squad has yet to be decided. It may depend on whether starting center Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic recovers fully from a chest injury. Howard has said he expects to be ready for the Olympics.
Greer added to team
Javelin thrower Breaux Greer has made the U.S. track and field team for the Beijing Olympics where he’ll join Tyson Gay, Allyson Felix and Jeremy Wariner on the 126-member roster.
Greer, an eight-time national champion, didn’t qualify at the recent Olympic trials. But USA Track & Field decided to place him on the team.
Injured Gay rests
Sprinter Tyson Gay is in Germany, resting, relaxing and getting ready for his next race – almost exactly like he planned before getting injured at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Gay sprained a muscle in the back of his left leg in a 200-meter qualifying race, a tumble that forced him to be carted off the track and ended his chances of winning two individual gold medals in Beijing.
Gay will run in the 100 meters and the 400 relay in Beijing.
Volleyball roster set
Lloy Ball and Reid Priddy were among the players chosen for the U.S. men’s indoor volleyball roster. The roster must be confirmed by the U.S. Olympic Committee.
Ball, a 6-8 setter, will play in his fourth Olympics. Middle blocker Tom Hoff makes his third Olympic team, and outside hitter Priddy makes his second.
The other players named to the team were Gabe Gardner, Kevin Hansen, Rich Lambourne, David Lee, Ryan Millar, Sean Rooney, Riley Salmon, Clay Stanley and Scott Touzinsky.
Hugh McCutcheon will make his Olympic debut as a head coach.
Iran’s hoop team invited
Iran’s national basketball team has been invited by the NBA to train in Utah and play against NBA and NBADL teams in preparation for the Beijing Olympics.
Iran will take part in the Rocky Mountain Revue, the Utah Jazz-hosted summer league and will play four games. The team will also observe NBA team practices and talk to players and coaches.
