George Takei, best known for playing Sulu on “Star Trek,” will never forget the first time he saw Brad Altman, the man he plans to marry.

It was more than two decades ago, and they were working out in a running club. He couldn’t take his eyes off Altman, the 71-year-old actor told AP Radio.

Takei said he asked Altman to help him train for a marathon, they fell in love, and now they’ve been living together for 21 years.

Altman said he proposed by getting down on one knee after seeing on TV that the California Supreme Court had legalized same-sex marriage. It surprised Takei, who thought he would be the one who popped the question.

Takei and Altman plan to marry Sept. 14. Walter Koenig, who played Chekov in “Star Trek,” will be the best man and Nichelle Nichols, who played Uhura, will be the matron of honor. Castmate Leonard Nimoy will be among the 200 guests, but probably not William Shatner.

No friend of Shatner’s, Takei has said the man who played Capt. Kirk didn’t treat him and most of the cast very well.

Will it explain Florida decision?

Sandra Day O’Connor is developing a free interactive Web program for middle-schoolers on the U.S. court system. The program will be called Our Courts and allow students to participate in realistic government simulations and investigate and argue actual cases.

He’s still a “Jackass,” though

“Jackass” prankster Steve-O has pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine. As part of the plea deal, the case against Steve-O, whose real name is Stephen Glover, will be dismissed after he completes a drug rehabilitation program, his attorney Barry Gerald Sands said.

Judd sings a new song

Ashley Judd says she decided to lend her voice against human trafficking after she “stumbled upon” the issue while visiting brothels, slums, hospices and other clinics in 12 nations. “I know that the unheard are helped when they are heard. I know that compassionate listening helps me, and my goal was to help the U.N. help them,” Judd said.

Now who’s lost, eh?

Ruben Royce, the 23-year-old man who robbed “Lost” star Josh Holloway (who plays Sawyer) and his wife at gunpoint in their Hawaii home in 2005, has been sentenced to 13 to 30 years in prison for a three-week crime spree. The sentence was imposed Tuesday after Royce pleaded guilty to multiple charges.
