Thursday’s results
Yankees 9, Blue Jays 8: At New York, Jason Giambi’s pinch-hit, two-run homer on a 0-2 pitch from B.J. Ryan in the bottom of the ninth inning capped the Yankees’ biggest comeback this season. They rallied from a five-run deficit for the victory over Toronto. Ryan blew his second consecutive save chance after starting the season 12 for 12.
Rangers 9, Indians 4: At Arlington, Texas, Michael Young homered and extended his hitting streak to 21 games, Kevin Millwood shook off a bad first inning to pitch into the seventh, and the Rangers beat Cleveland. David Dellucci had a two-run double for the Indians and C.C. Sabathia took the loss, his third straight.
Orioles 3, Twins 2: At Minneapolis, Adam Jones hit a tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning and Baltimore beat the Twins. Acquired as the top prospect in the off-season trade that sent All-Star pitcher Erik Bedard to Seattle, Jones delivered his second key hit of the week. In Monday’s win over Boston, Jones hit a three-run double to break an eighth-inning tie.
Red Sox 7, Rays 1: At Boston, Manny Ramirez homered, drove in five runs and got into a shouting match with a teammate as the Red Sox beat Tampa Bay in a game that included a bench-clearing brawl.
White Sox 6, Royals 2: At Chicago, Jose Contreras won his fourth straight decision and Jim Thome homered as the resurgent White Sox beat Kansas City to complete a three-game sweep. Orlando Cabrera’s two-run single capped a four-run second inning for Chicago.
