Dam removal wasteful

The Spokesman-Review

I disagree with some of Mr. Tuck’s reasons for removal of the Snake River dams (“Dams don’t live up to promises,” May 31).

The dams have delivered the benefits promised when they were built. We have abundant hydroelectric power. Mr. Tuck, may you be the first to unplug the appliances you enjoy because of hydropower. Our growing population constantly needs more energy – provided, in part, by Snake River dams.

Washington and Idaho gain revenue by selling the power we don’t use to other states.

Dams have locks, allowing commerce by barge as far upriver as Lewiston. Water stored behind the dams provides irrigation to farms in the Inland Northwest. Dams don’t cause flooding. Spillways allow water to be released, preventing flooding.

Yes, dams are a barrier to native salmon runs. This is being researched and solutions are being considered. Should the Lewiston waterfront be developed at the expense of eliminating the well used parks behind the dams?

The dams cost taxpayers millions of dollars to construct. Removing the dams would cost taxpayers billions more. Mr. Tuck, please, investigate all aspects of the Snake River dam issue before you make a decision for or against their removal.
