Royals 3, Yankees 2: At New York, Jose Guillen hit a tiebreaking solo home run off Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning to lift Kansas City to a win. The Yankees loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, and Melky Cabrera hit a trickler up the first base line. First baseman Mark Teahen quickly scooped the ball and neatly tossed to reliever Joakim Soria covering the bag for the final out.
White Sox 7, Twins 5: At Chicago, switch-hitter Nick Swisher homered from both sides of the plate and the White Sox beat Minnesota for their seventh straight victory. Swisher hit a solo home run from the right side in the fourth inning against Glen Perkins. Swisher turned around and connected as a lefty for a two-run shot in the sixth against Jesse Crain. Orlando Cabrera had four hits for Chicago, matching his career high.
Indians 8, Tigers 2: At Detroit, Ryan Garko and Kelly Shoppach both homered in the first two innings against Dontrelle Willis, helping Cleveland build an eight-run lead in a victory over the Tigers. The Indians kept Cliff Lee on the mound after a 57-minute rain delay in the fifth inning and he became the A.L.’s first 10-game winner. Lee (10-1) allowed two runs, six hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings.
Rays 13, Angels 4: At Anaheim, Calif., Evan Longoria had a pair of solo homers and an RBI double, Dioner Navarro drove in four runs with four hits and Tampa Bay beat Los Angeles. Edwin Jackson allowed four runs and 10 hits in seven innings, striking out two and walking one for the Rays. Tampa Bay outhit the Angels 18-12, with every Rays batter getting at least one hit.
