Notebook: Concussion hinders Church
New York Mets outfielder Ryan Church will go on the disabled list today, still slowed by the effects of a concussion nearly three weeks ago.
Church’s most recent examination with a neurologist didn’t show dizziness or any major symptoms, the Mets said Monday. But he doesn’t feel 100 percent, and the team decided to hold him out longer.
The move to the DL would be made retroactive to Friday, a day after Church last played. The Mets will make it official before opening a series at home against Arizona.
Church was injured May 20 at Atlanta. He was accidentally kneed in the head by Atlanta Braves shortstop Yunel Escobar while trying to break up a game-ending double play.
Zimmerman on hold
Washington Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman began rehabilitation exercises for his injured left shoulder and was to have the shoulder re-examined later in the day.
Zimmerman is on the 15-day disabled list with a small tear in the shoulder, which he hurt May 18 during a headfirst slide into second base at Baltimore. He hasn’t played since May 25, and the injury is most painful when he tries to swing a bat.
Sox accommodate fans
The Red Sox are moving up the starting times of two games against Baltimore this week so that Boston fans will not have to choose between watching baseball and the Celtics in the NBA finals.
The games today and Thursday at Fenway Park are now scheduled to begin one hour earlier at 6:05 p.m. The Celtics are scheduled to play the Lakers in Games 3 and 4 at Los Angeles those days, starting at 9 p.m. EDT.
Wednesday’s Red Sox-Orioles game remains a 7:05 p.m. start.
Clearing the bases
Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained left knee. Weeks was put on the DL retroactive to last Saturday and will stay in Milwaukee to receive treatment. … Cincinnati Reds shortstop Jerry Hairston left the game against the Florida Marlins after fracturing his left thumb.
