OUTSHOOT

Fine tuning sporting clays

The state’s top shotgunners have been demonstrating their prowess this week in the Washington State Sporting Clays Tournament, which concludes today at Landt Farms just west of Spokane.

Sporting clays was conceived as a golf-like game for groups of hunters who’d walk to stations that pose different field-shooting situations and target angles.

However, competition has refined the sport from “hunters clays” to “skeet in the woods.” Most tournament shooters, for example, shoulder their shotgun before calling for the target.

Hunters holding to the roots of the sport are the minority who call for the target with the shotgun in a low position to simulate the challenge of bagging a quail, duck, pheasant or rabbit.

Practice and precision in mounting the gun to the shoulder is the key to efficient field shooting.
