Temple Beth Shalom plans Kosher Dinner
Temple Beth Shalom, 1322 E. 30th Ave., will hold its 67th Annual Kosher Dinner Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The temple will serve more than 1,600 pounds of beef brisket, 3,600 pounds of potato knishes, 300 pounds of carrots and more.
Along with the food, there will be a Klezmer band, Chutzpah, the Kosher Redhots and the Mavens.
There also will be more singers and musicians to entertain guests.
Homemade baked goods will be for sale at the Temple Beth Shalom Del Bar, and there will be a gift shop offering items made in Israel, jewelry, books, ceramics, greeting cards designed by students at the temple and other traditional Judaica gifts.
The menu includes appetizers of herring fillets, kosher dill pickles, old-fashioned sauerkraut, garbanzo beans and horseradish. There will be beef brisket roasted with onions and spices; potato knishes, carrot tzimmes (carrots cooked with onions and special seasonings and accented with oranges and dried plums), Mediterranean spiced apples, challah bread and apricot kuchen.

Novena of Grace
St. Aloysius Parish, 330 E. Boone Ave,, will present its 81st annual Novena of Grace services starting today and continuing through March 14.
Rev. Denis Donoghue and Kent Hoffman will lead this year’s events which will emphasize providing a variety of opportunities and tools to open hearts to God.
The Novena is a nine-day period of prayer, a ritual started in 1615 in Goa, India in honor of St. Francis Xavier.
The church will offer three daily services for this nine-day period: 12:15, 3:30 and 5:15 p.m. The Sunday Novena service will begin at 12:30 p.m. to allow for the usual Sunday liturgy.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered 45 minutes before each service, in keeping with the Lenten tradition.

Service of Compline
The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will offer a Service of Compline Sunday at 4 p.m.
Compline is the final service of the day and comes from the tradition of praying before retiring each night.
The chanted service will be led by David Asplin and will be sung by an ensemble from the choir.
The cathedral also will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. for meditation and self-guided tours.

Piano concert
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive, will present Kendall Feeney Sunday at 7 p.m.
Feeney is a piano professor at Eastern Washington University and founder of the modern music series “Zephyr.”
Tickets are $20 at the door. Students can attend for $15.

Lenten movies
Manito United Methodist Church, 3220 S. Grand Blvd., will present the movie “Romero,” Saturday at 4 p.m.
The movie centers on Archbishop Oscar Romero, played by Raul Julia, who braces for violence in El Salvador in the 1980s between the ruling military elite and a band of Marxist guerillas.
The movie is free, and there will be free pop, popcorn and a discussion after the movie.

A Gathering for Peace
The Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard St., will present “A Gathering for Peace” Saturday from 4 to 8:30 p.m.
The evening will begin with a choice of activities from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Attendees can make yard signs that read “Inner Peace and World Peace.” Supplies will be provided, and the signs are available by donation. They could also learn dances of universal peace to celebrate the world’s spiritual traditions, or they can take time for prayer or meditation in the chapel.
At 5:30, there will be a potluck dinner and attendees are asked bring a dish to share.
At 7 p.m., the church will show the movie, “Peace in One Day.”

Travelogue
Heritage Congregational Church, 1801 E. 29th Ave., will present a travelogue, Sunday at 2 p.m.
The event will feature a South African safari narrated by John Wilson. The cost is $10 for adults and $4 for students.
