Fig Tree breakfast

The Fig Tree, a monthly newspaper that covers faith in action throughout the Inland Northwest, will hold its fifth annual Deepening our Roots Benefit Breakfast on Wednesday at Gonzaga University.

“Stories Brear Fruit: Sustenance for the Journey” will review the stories shared through the paper and its Web site over the past year.

Speakers include the Rev. Ann Frerks of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Cheney; Scott Cooper, director of parish social services for Catholic Charities; freelance writer Virginia de Leon; and the Rev. Happy Watkins of New Hope Baptist Church.

The breakfast runs from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. at the Globe Room in GU’s Cataldo Hall. There is no charge, but guests will be asked to help support The Fig Tree’s efforts.

Kosher Dinner

Temple Beth Shalom, 1322 E. 30th Ave., will hold its 67th Annual Kosher Dinner on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The menu includes appetizers of herring fillets, kosher dill pickles, old-fashioned sauerkraut, garbanzo beans and horseradish; beef brisket roasted with onions and spices; potato knishes; carrot tzimmes; Mediterranean spiced apples; challah bread; and apricot kuchen.

Homemade baked goods will be for sale at the deli bar, and there will be a gift shop offering traditional items.

Entertainers will include a Klezmer band, Chutzpah, the Kosher Redhots and the Mavens, among others.

Novena of Grace

St. Aloysius Parish, 330 E. Boone Ave,, is continuing its 81st annual Novena of Grace services through Friday.

The Novena is a nine-day period of prayer, a ritual started in 1615 in Goa, India in honor of St. Francis Xavier.

The church will offer three daily services, at 12:15, 3:30 and 5:15 p.m. The Sunday Novena service will begin at 12:30 p.m. to allow for the usual Sunday liturgy.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered 45 minutes before each service, in keeping with the Lenten tradition.

Service of Compline

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will offer a Service of Compline on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Compline, the final service of the day, comes from the tradition of praying before retiring each night. The chanted service will be led by David Asplin and will be sung by an ensemble from the choir.

The cathedral will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. for meditation and self-guided tours.

Piano concert

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive, will present pianist Kendall Feeney on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Feeney is a professor at Eastern Washington University and founder of the former modern music series Zephyr.

Lenten movies

Manito United Methodist Church, 3220 S. Grand Blvd., will present the movie “Romero” today at 4 p.m.

The film centers on Archbishop Oscar Romero, played by Raul Julia, who braces for violence in El Salvador in the 1980s between the ruling military elite and Marxist guerillas.

A Gathering for Peace

The Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard St., will present “A Gathering for Peace” today from 4 to 8:30 p.m.

The evening will begin with a choice of activities from 4 to 5:30 p.m., including making yard signs, learning dances of universal peace or prayer or meditation in the chapel.

At 5:30, there will be a potluck dinner; attendees are asked tobring a dish to share. At 7, the church will show the movie “Peace in One Day.”

Travelogue

Heritage Congregational Church, 1801 E. 29th Ave., will present a travelogue about a South African safari on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Prayer labyrinth

Zion Lutheran Church, 8304 E. Buckeye Ave., will offer “The Prayer Path: A Christ-Centered Labyrinth Experience” on Thursday and Friday as the end of Lent approaches.

St. Patrick’s Day

The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, 15319 E. Eighth Ave., will host its annual St. Patrick’s Day dinner next Saturday at 6 p.m.

Church concert

Opportunity Christian Church, 708 N. Pines Road, will host Kenny Andrews and the Calvary Baptist Choir in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday.

A soup supper will be served following the performance. Those planning to attend the meal are asked to bring a salad to share.
