Two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald signed a $40 million, four-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday just before leaving on a South American vacation he surely can afford.

The deal includes $30 million guaranteed – a generous figure for a franchise that was long considered one of the stingiest in sports.

“A woman who obtained a restraining order earlier this year in a domestic violence case against New England Patriots star Randy Moss wants the case dismissed, court records show.

“While in Charlotte, N.C. for the start of off-season conditioning, Carolina Panthers receiver Dwayne Jarrett, was arrested and charged with driving while impaired.

“The Kansas City Chiefs signed free-agent wide receiver, and former Washington State standout, Devard Darling.

“The Detroit Lions signed Chuck Darby to a three-year deal.

Hansbrough honored

Tyler Hansbrough will soon take his place among a select group of North Carolina basketball greats.

The junior forward was honored as national player of the year by Sporting News, ensuring he will become the eighth Tar Heel to have his number retired.

“Kathy Olivier resigned as UCLA women’s coach after 15 seasons. She will continue to work for the athletic department.

“Nolan Richardson said he’s no longer a candidate to become the men’s coach at Arkansas State.

“The WNBA’s San Antonio Silver Stars gave Becky Hammon a contract extension through 2011 and re-signed Ruth Riley to a two-year deal.

McPeak will retire

“It’s nice to know that this is it,” Holly McPeak said in announcing that the 2008 season would be her last. “When you know this is your last opportunity, every tournament is more focused.”

McPeak made the announcement at media day for the AVP season, which will open on April 11.

“Brigham Young was placed on probation for three years by the NCAA for violations in its men’s program.

Last appeal for Landis

Floyd Landis will make his final appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in New York next week in an effort to regain the 2006 Tour de France title he lost because of a positive doping test.

“Bode Miller criticized race organizers for canceling the season’s final World Cup downhill in Bormio, Italy, because of weather, which allowed Didier Cuche to clinch his second straight discipline title.

“”Lil’ John” Buttera, an innovative creator of hot rods, dragsters and Indy cars who was praised as much for his artistic designs as his engineering, has died. He was 68.

Buttera died March 2 at Los Alamitos Medical Center of complications from brain cancer, his son, Chris, said.

“The U.S. soccer team could only manage a 1-1 tie against Cuba in the first round of Group A play in the 2008 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifier in Tampa, Fla.
