Former conductor honored by band

From Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

The Spokane British Brass Band will present a memorial concert for its former conductor, Mark Williams, on Sunday at Spokane Falls Community College.

Williams, a well-known music composer and educator, died Jan. 3 in Bellingham from stab wounds inflicted by his son, who suffers from schizophrenia.

Sunday’s program will feature a variety of pieces he arranged over the past 12 years as a menber of the brass band, the last eight as its artistic director.

Soprano Ann Fennessy will sing selections including “I’d Give a Dollar For a Dime” and “Some Boy,” while tenor James McArthur will perform the likes of “Granada” and “O Sole Mio.”

Also featured will be three instrumental soloists from the band: Jim Phillips, cornet, on “Danza Alegre”; Bruce Brummett, tenor horn, Strauss’ Finale from Horn Concerto No. 1; and Andrew Fudge, trombone, “Hymne d’Adieu.”

Five members of the band will take turns at the conductor’s podium.

The concert begins Sunday at 3 p.m. in SFCC’s Music Building auditorium (Building 15). Tickets are $10 for adults (children and students admitted free), at the door or through TicketsWest outlets (509-325-SEAT, 800-325-SEAT, www.ticketswest.com).
