Book Notes: ‘Dreamers’ author reading

Best-selling author Mary Doria Russell will read from her new novel, “Dreamers of the Day,” on Friday at Auntie’s Bookstore in Spokane.

Russell’s 2005 novel “A Thread of Grace,” about Jews seeking refuge in Italy during World War II, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

Her previous books include a pair of futuristic stories about man’s first contact with aliens, “The Sparrow” and “Children of God.”

“Dreamers of the Day” is set at the 1921 Cairo Peace Conference, where Winston Churchill, Lady Gertrude Bell and D.E. Lawrence (aka “Lawrence of Arabia”) created the modern Middle East.

Russell will read from the book Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Auntie’s, 402 W. Main Ave. For more information call (509) 838-0206.

WORD up at NIC

North Idaho College Student Events is sponsoring three WORD events this week celebrating the written word.

Evanlene Melting Tallow, NIC’s minority student adviser, will present “American Indian Storytelling” on Tuesday.

Budding poets and other performers will entertain during an open mike night Wednesday, and slam poet George Watsky, winner of the 2006 Youth Speaks Poetry finals, appears Thursday.
