Bethel anniversary

Bethel AME Church, 645 Richard Allen Court, will celebrate 118 years of worship next week with a series of events.

The church is inviting the public to the celebration, titled “Watch and Pray.”

On Wednesday at 7 p.m., the church will hold a service of music and spirit.

The church will welcome the Rev. Jimmy D. Pierce of Unspeakable Joy Christian Fellowship on Thursday at 7 p.m.

The youth of the church will present a special service on Friday at 7 p.m.

On April 6, the church will present a special service at 3:30 p.m. featuring its anniversary sermon and the Rev. David Johnson of Walker Chapel AME Church in Seattle.

Conferences and speakers

Highland Park United Methodist Church, 611 S. Garfield St., is holding its 32nd annual Northwest United Methodist Nikkei Conference through Sunday.

The conference is a gathering of five historically Japanese American United Methodist Churches from Washington and Oregon.

The Rev. Howard Yoshida from Honolulu will preach during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service.

South Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church, 5607 S. Freya St., will host the seminar “Live Better … Live Longer” on April 6, 7, 9, 13 and 14 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

The seminars will include a full meal each night.

The cost is $50 per person and $25 per spouse. Registration is required by next Saturday; register by Tuesday and save $5 per person.

Unity events

The Unity in the Community Players will present the play “Steel Magnolias” today and Friday at 7 p.m. and next Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard St.

Rummage sale

Trinity United Methodist Church, 1725 E. Bridgeport Ave., continues its book and rummage sale today from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Items include sheet music, records, pictures, household items, furniture, jewelry and more.

Vacation Bible school

Even though it’s only spring, there are already plans for the first vacation Bible school of the year.

Dishman Baptist Church, 515 N. Argonne Road, is planning a spring break Bible school beginning Monday for children in pre-kindergarten through the sixth grade. The theme is “Outrigger Island.”

It will run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; extended care will be available from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be served and transportation can be arranged.

Laugh out loud

Opportunity Christian Church, 708 N. Pines Road, will celebrate Holy Humor Sunday during the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

The sermon will be delivered by ventriloquist Michael Waldrip and his companion, Chester. There will be balloons and paper hats along with other special touches.

Special worship

Millwood Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road, will host a special combined worship service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

The service will feature a performance by the Mukogawa Women’s Choir. A potluck brunch will follow.

Those with last names beginning with the letters A through G are asked to bring a side dish or casserole, H through P a salad, and Q through Z a dessert. The church will provide ham and rolls.
