Cougars display solid defense

From News Services The Spokesman-Review

The Washington State defense limited the offense to two rushing touchdowns as the Cougars completed their first scrimmage of spring football Friday afternoon at Martin Stadium.

Junior Chris Ivory rushed for scores of 1 and 15 yards – all the Cougars’ defense allowed during the 90-minute scrimmage. Ivory pushed across the first score to end a drive that was highlighted by freshman Logwone Mitz’s 46-yard run. Ivory later scampered off the right side to cap the scoring.

“We have a lot of work to do,” said Cougars coach Paul Wulff. “We did some OK things and we were better than last week, but our depth isn’t where it needs to be. They are learning a new system so it will take a while.

“But I was pleased that our defense today was much better than last week.”

Gary Rogers took most of the snaps at quarterback and ended his day 9 of 21 for 98 yards and no interceptions.

Ivory rushed for 38 yards on six carries.

On the defensive side, the Cougars forced two interceptions, one by freshman Marshal Pirtz and the other by sophomore Romeo Pellum, and registered four sacks – by juniors Andy Mattingly and Bob Hilgert, and seniors Cory Evans and Adam Hineline.
