University clinches GSL baseball championship

A victory by the University Titans and a loss by Mead clinched the Greater Spokane League title for U-Hi on Thursday. Michael Olson scored Danny Jordan for the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning as the host Titans topped the North Central Indians 2-1. Tyler Olson scattered five hits for the victory over NC (6-13) and he knocked in Jacob Olsufka for University’s (16-2) other run.

Beau Brett went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs as the host Ferris Saxons (14-5) dropped the second-place Mead Panthers (15-4) 7-4. Ferris’ Andrew Kittredge threw a complete game with nine strikeouts and Will Cornwell was 3 for 3 with an RBI.

Elsewhere, Jake Ellis hit the game-winning RBI in the seventh inning and East Valley (4-15) upset host Central Valley (10-9) 5-4. Aaron Awberry earned the win in relief and also had an RBI and AJ Mills was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. … Mark Douglas‘ two-out double scored Chad Como and host Rogers (8-11) edged Gonzaga Prep (10-9) 2-1 in nine innings. Jake Partridge had 17 strikeouts for Rogers and gave up a solo home run to Brian Karwacki for G-Prep’s only score. … Stefen Altberg highlighted a three-run seventh inning with a two-run single and Lewis and Clark (5-14) outlasted host Shadle Park (7-12) 7-3. Altberg finished with two hits and as many runs, and teammate Jordan Kellogg picked up the win, striking out five in six innings.

Austin Sommer had two doubles and four RBIs to lead Priest River (6-5, 5-3) past visiting Kellogg (2-11, 0-8) 10-8 in the first game of an Intermountain League doubleheader. Brian Nelson was 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs and John Butler went 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. In the second game, Nelson hit two home runs and collected four hits and five RBIs. Kyle Bradbury earned the win in 52/3 innings of work and he struck out five.

Shadle Park secures softball crown

Shadle Park clinched the GSL title as Tressa Predisik and Jessica Berlinger each homered to pace the Highlanders (18-0) past visiting Mead (12-6) 9-2. Sam Skillingstad had 13 strikeouts and hit a home run, but allowed a solo shot to Mead’s Alex Cey in the fourth inning.

Elsewhere, Kelsie Vallies fanned 15 in a one-hit shutout as North Central (14-3) dumped visiting Mt. Spokane (8-10) 3-0. Rhea Clary and Lanae Brown each had an RBI for NC in the two-run second inning. … Kendall Pavey allowed one earned run, five hits and struck out six to lead host Lewis and Clark (6-12) past Rogers (4-15) 4-2 at Hart Field. LC scored two runs in the fourth inning as Tashi Eldore plated Kristen Furulie for the go-ahead run. … Dakota Shiermeister was 3 for 4, scored three runs and had an RBI to help host University (14-3) beat East Valley (3-14) 12-2. Amanda Hickman also had three hits and two RBIs. Mollie Buelow pitched a complete game and tallied nine strikeouts… Ferris (1-16) earned its first win of year with a 10-5 win over visiting Gonzaga Prep (5-12). Nicole Romasko was 4 for 4 with a run and an RBI and Ferris used a five-run third inning to down GP and eliminate the Bullpups from the postseason.

Sammy Byers hit a home run to lead visiting Lewiston (11-9, 6-9 Inland Empire League) past Moscow (8-15, 6-11) 11-4. Jessica Ulrich earned the win despite allowing homers to Brigitte Lowe and Nancy Charles. … Blake Meredith threw 19 strikeouts in a complete game and host Post Falls (14-8, 10-6) beat Lakeland (10-12, 5-10) 4-1 in the first game of a doubleheader. She was also 3 for 3 with three RBIs. In the second game, Bri Joseph was 3 for 5 with three runs and an RBI and Meredith threw 15 strikeouts as Post Falls coasted past Lakeland 14-3.

“In 3A District I tournament opener, Alicia Schanilec and Morgan Bach each had two hits as Priest River (1-13, 1-7) blanked Bonners Ferry (1-6, 0-6) 11-0 and eliminated the Badgers in the 3A District I tournament opener at Spirit Lake. PR will play No. 1 seed Timberlake on Friday at 5 p.m.

Soccer

Daniel Igbinoba headed in a cross from Mitch Weller for Cheney’s (14-1, 12-1) first goal, and the Blackhawks cruised to a 3-0 decision over host Pullman (14-2, 12-1) in a Great Northern League tiebreaker at West Valley. … In another tiebreaker, Bryer Reynold scored the lone goal of the contest for West Valley (11-6, 9-4) as it defeated Riverside (9-7, 9-4) 1-0 at University High.

“Pairings are set for first round of the GSL/CBL 3A boys soccer regional, beginning today. Mt. Spokane is at Columbia Basin No. 3 Kamiakin at 7 tonight at Lampson Stadium in Kennewick. North Central, the Greater Spokane League’s No. 3 entrant, is at Columbia Basin champion Sunnyside at 6 p.m. On Saturday, GSL No. 1 East Valley hosts Hanford at 1 p.m. at Gonzaga Prep.

Golf

Lewiston’s Andy Hasenoehr shot a 3-under-par 67 to lead the field at the Post Falls High School Invitational at Prairie Falls Golf Course. Taylor Porter and Kyler Gable shot a 70 and 72, good for second and a tie for third place, respectively, to guide Coeur d’Alene to a 9-under 289 to lead the team scoring. … Gena Dodge of Post Falls shot a 4-over 74 for first place after one round at the Post Falls Invite. Freeman’s Gracie Schory fired a 76 for second place, and Brandon Koehler’s 79 put her in third place and led Lewiston to the top the team scoring at 365.
