Bucks hire Sampson

Former Indiana University coach Kelvin Sampson has agreed to become a Milwaukee Bucks assistant under Scott Skiles, a person with knowledge of the hiring told the Associated Press on Friday.

The person requested anonymity because Sampson has not yet signed a contract.

This is a second chance for Sampson, who resigned as the Hoosiers’ coach Feb. 22 and accepted a $750,000 buyout after an NCAA report charged him with five major NCAA rules violations.

UI adds two, must lose two

It’s been a busy week for new Idaho men’s coach Don Verlin.

He announced the signing of two players Tuesday followed by an announcement Friday of two more signings. Joining the Vandals are 6-foot-4 guard Kashif Watson out of Irvine (Calif.) Valley Community College and 6-6 forward Brandon Wiley out of City College of San Francisco.

These signings put the Vandals over the limit for scholarship players. Verlin said he will make an announcement next week, saying two players will be leaving the program. He declined to identify the players Friday, saying he wanted them to finish finals without distractions.

UConn grabs UW center

University of Washington center Jessica McCormack said she’s transferring to the University of Connecticut.

The 6-5 freshman, who is playing for the New Zealand national team, told the Hartford Courant that she has accepted a scholarship offer from UConn and is excited about her future with the team.

Connecticut officials say they can’t comment until McCormack enrolls at the school.

She appeared in 19 games for Washington last season, averaging just less than eight points per game.
