Mitch Weller totaled two goals and two assists, Justin Hale had a goal and two assists and Paul Holloway found the net twice on Saturday to spark Cheney to a 5-0 victory over West Valley in Great Northern League tournament action at Central Valley High School.
Cheney (15-1), the top seed from the GNL South, is the top seed for the district tournament and receives a first-round bye. West Valley (11-7), the top seed from the GNL North, is the No. 2 seed for district and earns a first-round bye.
In other GNL tournament play, Joey Nyberg scored two goals to lead North No. 2 seed Riverside to a 3-0 victory over South No. 2 seed Pullman at CV. Riverside (10-7) receives the third seed to district and will host sixth-seeded Medical Lake (7-8) on Tuesday. Pullman (14-3) settles for the fourth seed and will host fifth-seeded Deer Park (8-6) on Tuesday. Deer Park scored four unanswered goals and beat visiting Clarkston (2-14) 4-1 in a loser-out game. Chris Sweikhart had two goals and two assists to lead Medical Lake to a 5-0 win over visiting Colville (2-14) in the other loser-out game.
•Casey Duclos notched a goal and an assist and Chris Cochrane scored his first goal of the season to propel Lakeside (Nine Mile) to a 3-1 win over visiting Tonasket in the Tri-District 1A/2B playoffs. Lakeside (10-6) will play the Bridgeport-Chelan winner on Tuesday in a winner-to-state match.
•Raul Mendez netted a pair of goals to power Hanford to a 3-2 victory over East Valley (6-7) in a 3A regional match at Gonzaga Prep. Jordan Selland scored twice for EV.
Baseball
Ben Fisher tossed a two-hitter and Ryan Armbruster had three hits, including a double, as second-seeded Sandpoint (10-8) rolled to a 10-0 five-inning victory over visiting Moscow (2-18) in 4A Region I playoff action. Sandpoint travels to No. 1 seed Lakeland for a game on Monday. The loser of that game will play No. 3 seed Moscow on Tuesday in a loser-out game.
•St. Maries (13-4, 6-2) and Timberlake (9-9, 6-5) split an Intermountain League doubleheader at Spirit Lake. Derek Tweedy’s three-run double sparked St. Maries to a 9-5 win in the opener, and Jason Edwards’ two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Timberlake to a 9-8 victory in the second game. … Also in the IML, Priest River (7-7, 6-4) and host Bonners Ferry (10-6, 5-4) split a doubleheader. Zack Miller’s two-out RBI single in the seventh inning drove in the winning run and gave Priest River a 2-1 win in the first game. In the nightcap, Casey Nelson’s two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning sent Bonners Ferry to a 4-2 victory.
•Pateros scored four times in the fifth inning to rally for a 5-2 victory over St. John-Endicott in a loser-out District 9 1B playoff game at Endicott.
Softball
Cheney (8-12, 5-9) moved into a tie for fifth place after posting a 16-1, 8-4 sweep of visiting Medical Lake in Great Northern League play. A coin flip with Riverside (8-10, 5-9) on Monday morning will decide the fifth and sixth seeds into the district tournament. Colville (No. 1) and Pullman (No. 2) earned byes. The fifth seed will play at No. 4 Clarkston and the sixth seed will play at No. 3 West Valley, both on Saturday.
