TV’s best bets: ‘30 Rock’ goes to Washington

Mike Hughes Gannett News Service

Tonight’s must-see

“30 Rock” season-finale, 9:30 p.m., NBC.

The beauty of this show is its potential to go anywhere. Tonight, it heads to Washington. Jack (Alec Baldwin) has a government job. He’ll deal with Homeland Security and, he says, “the war on the poor.” (Liz hopes he means the War on Poverty. She’s not sure.) He meets an overwhelmed bureaucrat, wonderfully played by Matthew Broderick. There are some hilarious moments.

Tonight’s might-see

“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” 9 p.m., CBS.

This wraps up a culture exchange. “CSI” writers created a “Two and a Half Men” episode; now that is reversed. A situation comedy star has been killed in Las Vegas. Suspects include her stand-in and the show’s writers. Don’t rule those writers out. This is from guys who have written for Roseanne Barr, Brett Butler and Cybill Shepherd.

Other choices include

“Survivor,” 8 p.m., CBS. This edition has battered bodies and souls. Last week, muscular James Clement was the second medical evacuee; Amanda Kimmel pulled a spectacular trick to oust Alexis Jones. Five people near Sunday’s finale.

PBS’ “Live From Lincoln Center,” 8 p.m., KSPS; 9 p.m. KUID. It’s an all-star “Camelot,” with Gabriel Byrne, Marin Mazzie, Fran Drescher and more.

“My Name is Earl,” 8 p.m., NBC. Earl is back with Billie (Alyssa Milano) and wants her to have her own karma list.

“Scrubs,” 8:30 p.m., NBC. Dr. Cox tells his kids about his day – but tells it as a fairy tale, complete with a monster.

“Grey’s Anatomy,” 9 p.m., ABC. Mark’s trysts have forced a new date-and-tell policy.

“Tougher in Alaska,” 10 p.m., History Channel. Here’s a fascinating look at modern-day gold-miners, some of them well-funded and some of them on their own.

“Lost,” 10:02 p.m., ABC. Last week had a powerful and frustrating look at Jack’s rise and fall in the future, when he gets off the island. In the present, however, Locke finally finds the cabin, where there may be an all-wise adviser.
