Student art work on display at the MAC
Eighteen students from Pasadena Park Elementary have their own museum display.
Third-grade teacher, Melissa Fennen, said the artwork created by her class will be the first student art displayed in a newly created area at the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture. The show that opened last week runs through June 15. A reception also was held last week in the students’ honor.
Fennen had asked earlier this school year about an opportunity to display student work at the MAC related to a study on water conservation and the impact of trash.
“Four to five months later, they have created a policy and created a space for kids’ artwork and since I had inquired, they allowed us to be first,” Fennen said.
The students’ art includes a watercolor painting that each of them did in collaboration with Heidi Arbogast, art educator at the MAC.
“We collaborated,” said Fennen. “I collected snow, which melted, and the kids used the water from that for their artwork. She (Arbogast) read some poems – water poetry – and the kids created their artwork from that.”
Students vs. Robots
An exhibition will feature robots and students’ design competitions next Saturday at West Valley High School. Aimed at drawing youths of all ages regionally, the event starts at 10 a.m. and is free.
“This is going to be action-packed,” said Karlicia Berry, robotics coordinator with the North Idaho Discovery Association. She added that students will be involved in an active competition with robots that perform certain tasks.
“There will be music, robots. What they’ve done is take science technology and they’ve made it almost like a sporting event.”
The exhibition’s goal is to expose and educate people about FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics and what it has to offer students in the Inland Northwest. The public can attend an information session from 10 to 10:30 a.m., and then four robotic leagues for grades one through 12 will demonstrate from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“One of the focuses will be competition designing robots that will perform certain tasks,” said Berry.
The exhibition is being put on in cooperation by FIRST enthusiasts from around the region. All of the FIRST Leagues will be represented: FIRST Robotics for high school students; VEX Robotics for high school students; FIRST Lego League for 9- to 14-year-olds; and Junior Lego League for those ages 7 to 9.

All-district concert Thursday
More than 400 Central Valley School District students in grades five through 12 will perform in an all-district orchestral concert on Thursday. The concert will be held at 7 p.m. at the Central Valley High School Theatre, 821 S. Sullivan Road.
Admission is free.
The concert will include a special tribute to the late Mark Williams, a longtime Spokane-area music educator and esteemed composer of works for school bands and orchestras. Williams was killed earlier this year. The combined orchestra will perform two pieces by Williams, “Fancy Fiddles” and “Mississippi Cakewalk,” in his memory.
The Central Valley School District’s six orchestra teachers, Mason Flemmer, Chad Hocutt, Eugene Jablonsky, Mark Sorensen, Mark Tietjen and Tanya Ward have collaborated for this concert and will conduct. In addition to the Williams tribute, the students will perform within their grade levels. The fifth-grade orchestra will play “Surfin’ Safari” and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” both arranged by Jablonsky. The seventh- and eighth-grade orchestra will perform “Holiday.” The sixth-grade orchestra and the high school orchestra will each play two selections, including “Jurassic Park” and “American Landscape,” respectively.
