Track and field

Melinda Owen won a sixth Western Athletic Conference pole vault title and helped Idaho’s women to a 50-point lead Friday at the league’s track and field championships in Boise.

Owen led teammate K.C. Dahlgren in a 1-2 sweep with a clearance of 13 feet, 51/4 inches for 18 of UI’s 88 points, though sprint-strong Louisiana Tech is poised for a huge run today. Idaho’s men are in fourth place, 36 points behind host Boise State.

Two other Vandals won titles on the day – Melissa McFadden in the women’s 10,000 meters and Russ Winger in the men’s discus.

“Eastern Washington junior Erica Kirley-Price – just sixth on the qualifying list – led teammate Nicole Luckenbach in a 1-2 sweep of the hammer, winning by just 2 inches with a last-attempt 179-1 at the Big Sky Conference championships in Sacramento, Calif. EWU’s Bonnie Millard defended her title in the discus with a 152-9 toss. EWU is tied for second place.

On the men’s side, freshman Aaron Mettler launched the javelin 205-6 to lead a 1-5-8 Eastern finish, as the Eagle stood in sixth place.

Idaho State’s Erin Bell, a senior from Rathdrum, won the long jump at 19-43/4.

“Washington State’s Sara Trane defended her title in the 3,000 steeplechase as Washington State runners finished 1-3-5 in the event at the Pacific-10 Conference championships in Tempe, Ariz. The Cougar women were third and the men fifth after five events.

Senior Jon Jeffreys took third in the men’s javelin with a throw of 230-9.

Baseball

Tyson Van Winkle went 3 for 5 with a double and a run scored as Gonzaga (29-22, 9-9 WCC) defeated Loyola Marymount (22-31, 6-13) 7-4 in Los Angeles. GU’s Matt Field took a perfect game into the fifth inning and a no-hitter into the sixth. He allowed three runs on five hits in 7 2/3 innings.

“A seven-run sixth inning highlighted UCLA’s 10-0 victory over Washington State in Los Angeles. Three pitchers for UCLA (27-23, 9-10 Pac-10) held the Cougars (28-23, 6-13) to four hits.

“Third-ranked Arizona State (42-9, 13-6 Pac-10) defeated Washington (31-18, 10-9) 13-3 at Tempe, Ariz., as Huskies pitcher Jorden Merry took his first loss of the season after eight wins.

Women’s basketball

Gonzaga University has announced the addition of two players.

Kelly Bowen, a 6-foot wing/forward from Victoria, Australia, will be eligible in the fall. She averages 14 points and 11.5 rebounds per game with the Frankston Blues, a member of the Youth League Women’s Division of the Big V League in Australia.

Also, Gonzaga confirmed that Katelan Redmon (Lewis and Clark High) is transferring from the University of Washington. She will be eligible in the 2009-10 season.

Softball

CC Spokane went 1-1 on the day at the NWAACC tournament in Portland.

The Sasquatch lost their opener 4-1 against Clackamas, then stayed alive with a 9-0 victory over Centralia. CCS plays Wenatchee Valley at 9 this morning.

“Ashlyn Watson singled home Alicia Blake in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift No. 24 Washington to a 2-1 victory over Texas in an NCCA Regional game at Houston. Blake scored both runs for Washington.

Soccer

Jesse Kupfer and Michael Hickman Jr. scored goals and the Ogden Outlaws posted a 3-0 victory over the Spokane Spiders (1-2) in USL Premier Development League soccer action in Ogden, Utah.

Spokane continues its Utah road trip tonight in Provo against the BYU Cougars.
