Washington State 2A: Mitch Weller scored two goals and Alex Adams also scored as Cheney (19-2) defeated Grandview 3-1 Friday in a quarterfinal at Grandview. Cheney will play either Quincy or Port Townsend in the semifinals Friday at Sumner, Wash.

Softball

Washington 4A East Regional: Greater Spokane League teams went 3-1 at Franklin Park. Central Valley (18-6) held off Pasco 5-4 as Alexa Morales drove in two runs and Chrystal Holt went 2 for 4 with an RBI. … University (18-7) defeated Walla Walla 3-0 in eight innings. Ali Warren led off the eighth with a double and scored the game’s first run on a throwing error. … Shadle Park (23-0) blanked Moses Lake 1-0 as Sam Skillingstad struck out 14. She allowed one hit, that in the seventh inning as her perfect innings streak ended at 20. … Richland scored in the sixth inning for a 1-0 win over Mead (14-10).

Track and field

Idaho 5A Region I boys: Lake City (53.5 points) and Lewiston (49.5) dominated the first day at Lewiston. Cody Helbing led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 3,200 meters for Lake City, winning in 10 minutes, 9.19 seconds. Lewiston’s Cody Hays won the discus (159 feet, 11 inches) and finished second in the shot put (49-0).

Idaho 5A Region I girls: Coeur d’Alene (37.5) held a slight lead over Lewiston (35). CdA athletes won the shot put and 3,200 meters, while Lewiston went 1-2-3 in the long jump and also won the triple jump and 800 relay.

Idaho 4A Region I boys: Moscow (43) held a comfortable lead over Lakeland (24) and Sandpoint (17) after the first day, also at Lewiston. Moscow’s five event wins included Mitchell Nelson’s 127-11 throw in the discus and a 14-foot pole vault by Jeremy Klas.

Idaho 4A Region I girls: Sandpoint (44) was out in front of Lakeland (22) and Moscow (19). Sandpoint’s Brooke DeMers won the high jump (5-0) and long jump (15-10).

Idaho 3A District 1 girls: Bonners Ferry with 50 points and host Timberlake with 31 led the way in the team standings after the first day at Spirit Lake. Samantha Hiatt was the leading qualifier in the 100 hurdles, second in the pole vault and ran a leg on the second-place 800 relay team for the Badgers.

Idaho 3A district 1 boys: Kellogg (34 points), Timberlake (26) and Priest River (23) were out front in the team standings. Kellogg’s Ian Marshall won the shot put (48-9) and teammate Kenny Stuart the 3,200 meters (10:26). Timberlake had two firsts, with Travis Porter winning the high jump at 6-2 and the 1600-meter relay team winning in 3:43.2.

Tennis

Idaho State 5A: At Timberline High School in Boise, Sam Lyons of Coeur d’Alene in boys singles, Jenna Johnson of Lake City in girls singles and the Lewiston girls doubles team of Theresa Kucera and Marina Wold all went 2-1 to advance to today’s play in the 5A tournament.

Idaho State 4A: Sandpoint players advanced to three of the semifinals at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club. Dustin Pierce is in the semifinals of boys singles, Piper Wahlin and Ryan Williams in mixed doubles and Mikka Nostdahl and Justin Vaughn in boys doubles.

Idaho State 3A: Clark Fork’s boys doubles team of Mike Martin and Thomas McMahon have advanced to the championship and the girls doubles team of Shaina Gustafson and Chelsea Macumber have made the semifinals at Vallivue High School.

Washington 4A Region IV: Whitman Hough of Ferris has advanced to the boys singles championship match. Other GSL finalists are Katie Griffith (Ferris) against Katrina Schwab (Mead) in girls singles, Britta Stime and Katijene Stime (Mead) in girls doubles and Kevin Satre and Colin Siok (Ferris) in boys doubles. The event is at Central Valley and University high schools.

Washington 3A Region IV: At Mt. Spokane High School, the only GSL entry that advanced to today’s rounds was the Mt. Spokane boys doubles team of Nick McMurray and John Maccini, which made the semifinals. Four other GSL entries were seeded into today’s semifinals and did not play on Friday. Washington District 7 A/B: Reardan’s Tim Eggleston won boys singles and Davenport’s Jennifer Smith won the girls singles.

Golf

Idaho State 5A boys: Coeur d’Alene’s Tyler Johnson was tied for fourth place and the Vikings were third in the team standings after the first round at Twin Falls Municipal Golf Course. Johnson’s 67 was three strokes off the pace set by Quinn Carbol of Highland. Twin Falls had a 278 total, followed by Eagle at 279 and CdA at 280.

Idaho State 5A girls: Alyssa Nilsson of Lewiston shot 78 to tie for fifth place and Genna Dodge of Post Falls shot a 79, good for seventh place after the first round. Lewiston was fourth and Coeur d’Alene fifth in the team standings, both well off the pace of Twin Falls.
