UCLA sweeps Cougars
Washington State’s Paul Gran homered with two outs in the ninth inning. But that was all the offense the Cougars could muster on Sunday.
Brent Dean and Alden Carrithers delivered back-to-back run-scoring singles in the fifth inning to give the UCLA Bruins a 2-1 Pacific-10 Conference victory over Washington State at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles.
The Bruins (29-23, 11-10) completed a three-game sweep of the series with the victory.
UCLA starter Gavin Brooks issued seven bases-on-balls to Cougars batters in 52/3 innings but held WSU scoreless. The Cougars (28-25, 6-15) were just 2 for 18 at the plate with runners on base.
“Angelo Songco was 2 for 4 and drove in four runs to lead Loyola Marymount (23-32, 7-14) to an 11-1 West Coast Conference victory over Gonzaga (30-23, 10-10) at Los Angeles, ending the Bulldogs season.
“Third-ranked Arizona State (44-9, 15-6) wrapped up a series sweep with a 13-7 Pacific-10 Conference victory over the Washington Huskies (31-20, 10-11) at Tempe, Ariz.
Softball
The Houston Cougars advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time in school history, beating the Washington Huskies 2-1 at Houston.
Haley Valis homered with one out in the fifth inning to put the 11th-ranked Cougars (53-9) up 1-0.
Houston made it 2-0 in the sixth when Katie Bush led off double and scored on the third of three consecutive walks.
Morgan Stuart homered in the seventh to bring the Huskies (30-25-1) to within one.
Tennis
The Community Colleges of Spokane men captured three individual titles and swept all three doubles positions to win the NWAACC title in tournament play at Spokane Falls CC.
Individual singles champions were Mike Shelton (No. 1), Mike McIntosh (No. 3) and Cameron Rasmussen (No. 6), while the doubles teams of Doug Truitt and McIntosh (No. 1), Shelton and Andrew Person (No. 2) and Stephen Grant and Rasmussen (No. 3) also were crowned.
CCS coach Wally Heidenson was named coach of the year. The CCS women finished fifth.
