Bulls rush Gatineau
KITCHENER, Ontario – The Belleville Bulls gave the Spokane Chiefs a huge assist on Monday night.
Shawn Matthias scored twice and Nigel Williams finished with a goal and two assists as the Bulls beat the Gatineau Olympiques 6-3 in round-robin play at the Memorial Cup, assuring Spokane a berth in Sunday’s championship final.
The Bulls (1-1) scored three times in the third period to break a 3-3 tie, and two shorthanded goals in the game.
Bulls goalie Mike Murphy finished with 30 saves and Jan Mursak, Cory Tanaka and Keaton Turkiewicz also scored for the Bulls. Adam Perry added two assists in front of 6,639 at the Kitchener Auditorium.
Hugo Laporte, Michael Stinziani and Claude Giroux had goals for the Olympiques. Defenceman Takuma Kawai had two assists and goalie Ryan Mior stopped 41 of 47 shots.
Neither team could stay out of the penalty box. The Olympiques (0-2) were 0 for 7 on power-play opportunities while Belleville converted 1 of 10 advantages.
