In brief: Details of doping scandal exposed in trial

U.S. track and field’s doping scandal was laid out during testimony Tuesday at former track coach Trevor Graham’s trial in San Francisco.

Graham is charged with three counts of lying to federal authorities investigating a massive sports doping ring centered at the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, or BALCO, in Burlingame, Calif.

The names of many of the nation’s drug-disgraced athletes were dredged up including Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery and Antonio Pettigrew – each won gold in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney while training with Graham.

Lead government investigator Jeff Novitzky said admitted performance-enhancing drug dealer Angel “Memo” Heredia, testified he helped those track athletes and others – through Graham – obtain banned performance-enhancing drugs.

“Russia’s Tatyana Lysenko, the world record holder in the women’s hammer throw, was banned for two years by track and field’s governing body for a doping violation.

Horse racing

UPS pledges $10,000

Shipping giant UPS, which has ridden a wave of enthusiasm amid Big Brown’s success as the horse seeks to become the first Triple Crown winner in 30 years, has pledged $10,000 to a charity that aids thoroughbreds.

The company said it wants to honor Eight Belles, who was euthanized after an injury at the Kentucky Derby.

“Members of a Kentucky panel that oversees drug rules for horse racing talked in Lexington about tightening the reins on steroid use.

The host state for the Kentucky Derby is a high-profile holdout from a proposal to ban or significantly limit the use of certain anabolic steroids in racehorses.

Tennis

UCLA, Georgia win

UCLA’s women beat California in an NCAA championship match in Tulsa, Okla. It was UCLA’s record 102nd NCAA overall title.

UCLA coach Stella Sampras Wilson, the older sister of tennis star Pete Sampras, led the Bruins to the title match in 2004 and again last year, and played on runners-up in 1989 and 1991. This was the school’s first women’s tennis title.

Georgia defeated Texas 4-2 for the first of its six NCAA men’s titles to come away from its home courts.

“Former No. 1 Lindsay Davenport has pulled out of the French Open for personal reasons.

“James Blake gave the U.S. a split of its two singles matches against Argentina at the World Team Cup in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Montoya’s crew in flux

Juan Pablo Montoya will have his third crew chief in a month for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 when Brian Pattie takes over the No. 42 Dodge for this week’s race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C.

“Lloyd Moore, a NASCAR winner in 1950 and the oldest former driver, has died at 95 in Frewsburgy, N.Y.

“Loyola Marymount assistant Brian Priebe has been named assistant men’s basketball coach at Montana State. Priebe coached at Eastern Washington from 1995-2000.
