Spokane shooter Olympic alternate
Amanda Furrer, 17, of Spokane, finished third in the women’s three-position small-bore rifle event at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials ending Thursday, making her the first alternate for the two berths on the U.S. team heading this summer to Beijing.
The Shadle Park High School junior scored 1,926.9 in three days of shooting at Fort Benning, Ga. The top two shooters winning berths to the Olympics were Jamie Beyerle, 27, of Lebanon, Pa., with 1,959.0, and Sandra Fong, 18, of New York, with 1,937.6.
“Being an alternate was not her vision, but she did very well,” said Mike Furrer, Amanda’s father and local coach for the Spokane Rifle Club junior team. “She was the youngest shooter on the line.”
Furrer has been asked to join the Olympic-bound shooters for Europe’s most prestigious competition in the Czech Republic in June.

Mullennix gets 6th year to play
Washington State University senior Matt Mullennix has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, WSU announced.
Mullennix, a defensive end from Spangle, missed the entire 2006 season after a knee injury prior to the opener at Auburn. Mullennix also had a season-ending injury early in the 2004 season. Following a medical appeal process, the NCAA approved the request to give him one more year.
WSU opens its 2008 season against Oklahoma State at the Cougar Gridiron Classic, Aug. 30 at Qwest Field in Seattle.
